The College, situated in the heart of the city, was started during the academic year 1963-64 under the aegis of the BMS EDUCATIONAL TRUST. The Trust is named after LateDharmaprakashaRajakaryaprasaktha B. M. Sreenivasaiah, whose philanthropy resulted in the establishment of the First Engineering College under the Private Management of the State of Karnataka.

Initially, the college was affiliated to Mysore University, later Bangalore University and now to Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) and is approved by Bar Council of India, New Delhi.

During the inception of the College, the Administrative Principal, LateA GRamachandra Rao, was the Minister for Education in the State of Mysore. His successors Hon'bleMr.Justice E S Venkataramaiah and Hon'ble Mr Justice M N Venkatachalaiah, former Chief Justices of India, were in the first decade, associated with the funding and guiding the institution.

The College is proud to mention that Hon'ble Mr. Justice Rama Jois, former Chief Justice, Punjab and Haryana High Court and former Governor of State of Bihar, Hon'ble Late Mr. Justice H. G. Balakrishna, former Judge, High Court of Karnataka, Hon'ble Mr. Justice S R Nayak, former Judge, High Court of Karnataka & former Chief Justice, High Court of Chhattisgarh & former Chairman K S HRC and Prof. Lakshmi Sagar, former Minister of Law & Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Karnataka also served the institution in several capacities including as members of teaching faculty.

Late VKrishnamurty, Senior Advocate, Prof. Late Venkatakrishnappa, Prof. Late S V Ramanna, Prof. T K Acharya, Prof. V Narayana Swamy served as former Principals'.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission:

An applicant who has successfully completed Pre-University course or Senior Secondary School Course ('+2') or equivalent such as (10+1, 'A' level in Senior School Leaving Certificate Course) from a recognized University/Institution of India or outside or from Senior Secondary Board or equivalent, constituted or recognized by the Central or State Government/s of India or from any equivalent institution from a foreign country recognized by the Government of that Country for the purpose of issue of International qualifying certificate equivalent to 10+2 on successful completion of the course, may apply for and be admitted into the course

The minimum percentage of marks in qualifying examination shall not be below 45% (44.5% and above shall be treated as 45%) of total marks in case of general category applicants and 40% (39.5% and above shall be treated as 40%) of total marks in case of SC and ST applicants.

The maximum age for seeking admission is limited to twenty years in the case of general category of applicants and to twenty-two years in the case of applicants from SC, ST and other backwards communities as on 1 June2014.

There is a Writ Petition pending at the Supreme Court of India regarding the maximum age limit prescribed for admission and the same will be subject to the status/condition/the final judgment by the court, on the date of admission.

Explanation

The applicant who has passed the prescribed minimum qualification in a single sitting examination without having the basic qualification (1 to 9 std. of schooling) is not eligible for admission to 5 yr. LL.B. Law courses of KSLU, Hubli.

Admission Procedure to BMS:

Admission to the course shall be made strictly on the basis of the merit taking into account total marks obtained in the qualifying examination. Provided that while making admission to the course reservation policy of the Government of Karnataka governing admission to higher educational institutions issued from time to time shall be applied.

Intake

No College or Department of Studies in Law authorised to impart education in the B.A. LL.B., degree course shall admit not more than 60 students in one division.

The University shall reserve the right to prescribe the number of divisions in each Law College or the Department of Studies in Law.

Candidate seeking admission to the Five-year B.A. LL.B., degree course and those admitted to such course shall pay the tuition and other fees as prescribed by the University from time to time

Curriculum

Candidates seeking admission to the Five-year B.A. LL.B., degree course shall have to attend 10 Semester courses spread over 5 years. In each Semester, the student shall have to study the courses prescribed by the University in these Regulations.

The course descriptions shall be, as set out from time to time, in the Schedule.

Medium of Instruction

The medium of Instruction in the Five-year B.A., LL.B., degree course shall be English. However, the students shall have the option to answer the question paper in the examination either in English or in Kannada.

Attendance

No student shall be permitted to appear for the end-of-Semester examination in a given course unless he/she has, to the satisfaction of the course teacher, fulfilled the course requirements and has put in not less than 70% attendance in the course concerned. Provided that a student who has attended not less than 65% of classes in each subject prescribed may be permitted to keep the term for reasons to be recorded in writing and to the satisfaction of the Principal of the college or the Dean of the Faculty as the case may be.

Promotion Against Lateral Entry and Exit

There shall be no lateral entry on the plea of graduation in any subject or exit by way of awarding a degree splitting the integrated double degree course, at any intermediary stage of integrated double degree course

Promotion

No student shall be promoted to the next year of the course unless he/she has passed a minimum of two subjects in each semester.

Students are required to successfully complete the entire course within eight years from admission to the course.

Award of the Degree

A Student shall be eligible for the award of the B.A., LL.B., (Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws) Degree after he/she has successfully completed all the prescribed courses in all the Semesters and provided his or her character and conduct are found to be satisfactory during the course.

Award of Classes

  • 70% and over: First Class with Distinction
  • 60% to 70%: First Class
  • 50% to 60%: Second class
  • 40% to 50%: Pass class

Award of Difficulty

If any difficulty arises in giving effect to the provisions of this Regulation the Vice Chancellor may by order of notification do anything which appears to him necessary for the purpose of removing the difficulty. Every such order so notified shall as soon as may be after his notification, be laid before the Academic Council and Syndicate for approval.

Repeal and Savings Clause

Any Regulation existing hereinbefore governing the B.A., LL.B., Course stand repeated.

Any action, decision or direction taken or directed by the University under any Rule or Regulation in force at any time earlier than this Regulation coming into force, shall be valid, binding on the institutions and remain in force notwithstanding anything contained in this Regulation.

Application Form and Fees

After Downloading the online Application Form, the candidate shall forward the Filled-in application form to the College address, along with a demand draft for Rs.550 towards the prospectus and application fee drawn in favour of the Principal, BMS College of Law, payable at Bengaluru. On receipt of D.D. Prospectus will be sent to the candidates at the postal address given in the Application Form.

About BA LL.B

BA LL.B is an abbreviated version of the popular integrated Bachelor of Law course at undergraduate level. The length of this integrated course is five years. The program has been prepared with an intention to create dedicated professionals who are well trained in the legal framework and contractual requirements. Students at BMSCL are exposed to the latest laws and judgments pertinent to the core sectors of India, apart from studying the regular legal subjects.

About B.Com LL.B

Bachelor of commerce & Bachelor of Legislative Law is a 5 Year undergraduate administrative Law Professional integrated course.

The course is a combination of Law & Commerce.

Students in this program will majorly specialise with commercial and Corporate Law.

The program combines the knowledge of the economic sciences with special training in taxation law.

The trade, finance and commerce component of the B. com. LL.B. course includes subjects such as accounts, finance, economics, language and, which are supplemented by a range of law courses, and together they provide a broad-based multidisciplinary foundation to the curriculum.

Eligibility

Eligibility for Law courses (LLB, integrated LLB) at B.m.s. College Of Law, Bangalore -

1) 3 year Law Degree Course - A candidate who has graduated in any discipline from a recognized University can appear for L.L.B. course

2) Integrated Degree Program - Candidate must have passed 10+2 Higher Secondary Exam or an exam cosidered to be equivalnt to 10+2 Higher Secondary Exam can enrol for integrated degree program (LLB and a first degree in any other subject).

Candidates who have obtained 10+2 Higher secondary exam certificate or a graduate degree after taking up other courses through distance mode are also considered eligible for integrated degree course. But those candidates who have obtained 10+2 Higher secondary exam certificate or a graduate degree through distance mode or from open universities without any basic qualification are not eligible for admission into law courses.

Minimum marks for admission into law courses -

1) 40% for SC/ST candidates

2) 45% for other candidates
