What is an Executive MBA?

An Executive or an EMBA is a postgraduate program in management that is specifically designed for executives who are already in the workforce. EMBA enables the students to earn an MBA degree without having to leave their jobs. EMBA students also have a higher work experience than regular and part-time MBA students. It is also shorter than a regular MBA program.

An executive MBA is typically a one-year program that is either residential or part-time or online. It is different from a part-time MBA where the students are working but not necessarily executives. The course can be taken in correspondence mode also.

Executive MBAs are strictly restricted to corporate executives and senior managers. An executive MBA demands work experience ranging from three to fifteen years. Since it has a duration of just one year, it focuses more on the core courses. EMBA programs do not offer a wide variety of electives to choose from. However, IIMs in India do offer a variety of electives in their executive programs.

Curriculum

A one-year executive program is generally divided into five terms. The areas that EMBA focuses on are Marketing, Production and Quantitative methods, Finance and Accounting, Economics, Human Resource Management, Organisational Behaviour, etc.

Elective courses are also offered in marketing, finance, supply chain management, strategic management, etc. Students can also take up individual research projects as electives, which includes a case analysis or entrepreneurial business plans. In the final term, the students work on a capstone project which simulates real-life problem-solving processes in business.

Executive MBA programs also offer a student exchange program or an International Immersion Program (IIP), which enables the students to study abroad. It involves globally-focused case studies, thus providing them international exposure.

Eligibility

  • Candidates should possess an undergraduate degree in any discipline from a recognised institution in order to be eligible for application.
  • The minimum age for application is usually 25.
  • They should be working professionals with 4-15 years of work experience. The work experience varies with each institution.

Top business schools like the Indian School of Business (ISB) demand work experience of 10-25 years, whereas the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) requires only four years of work experience. The candidate should also possess a valid GMAT/GRE score. Some institutes also accept CAT scores, while some conduct their own entrance examinations.

Admission process

Admission to an executive program usually has three stages.

  1. Eligible candidates can apply online to the respective programs.
  2. They are then subjected to a writing ability test and shortlisted for a personal interview.
  3. Some institutes demand a Statement of Purpose (SoP) and a Letter of Recommendation (LoR) or Employer-support letter during the admission process.

Fee

Executive programs are more expensive than regular MBA programs. The average fee for these programs ranges from INR 30,00,000 to INR 40,00,000. In most cases, the student can avail financial support from the employer.

Scope and career opportunities

The average package of executive MBA graduates ranges from INR 15,00,000 to INR 22,00,000. After an executive MBA, the student has the opportunity to get hired as the

The disadvantages are very few which are-

  • Academic pressure along with workload- Managing both of them can be exhausting.
  • Age- Students of executive program usually age between 30-45. Studying at that age after a long break from academics is not a piece of cake.
