All About Polytechnic Entrance Exams in India
Polytechnic Entrance Exams are conducted for admission into institutes which provide technical and occupational education diploma, also called as “diploma engineering.” These exams are affiliated by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and they are conducted by the respective State Board of Technical Education.
India has over 23,000 government and private polytechnic colleges which offer popular courses like-

These courses are sought after because they are industry and application oriented, hence the increase in job opportunities. Companies like Toyota, Mahindra, India Cements, Tata Power etc hire these graduates. Most importantly, polytechnic courses are available at a lower fee when compared to engineering degree courses.
Students who join polytechnic institutes after class 10th can take lateral entry in the second year of engineering degree directly after clearing the corresponding entrance test. These courses are usually for a period of 3-years.

Polytechnic Entrance Exams Eligibility
To get admission into polytechnic courses students must be aware of the criteria, which is as follows-
- Class 10th and 12th score- Candidates must have passed class X or XII with 35%-50% marks for admission into polytechnic courses, for instance- The JEECUP polytechnic entrance test demands “10th or 12th pass with at least 35% marks” to sit for the exam.
- Preferred subjects- Science, Math and English are compulsory at matriculation level, as is the criteria prescribed by Delhi POLYCET exam.
- Industrial Training Centre (ITI) certificate might be demanded by some polytechnic institutes.
Age limit- There is no upper age limit for most of the courses, but some exams have fixed it. For instance, the DCECE Polytechnic entrance exam has fixed the upper age as 30 years for PMD course and 32 years for PM course. The lower age limit is 14-19 years. SC/ST/OBC candidates get 5% relaxation in the required percentage.

Exam Structure
Polytechnic Entrance Exams are conducted through the online/paper-based methods. They contain about 100-150 questions depending on the State Board of Education prescription for respective states.
The questions are objective type questions with MCQs. As far as negative marking is concerned, exams like the TS POLYCET exam have no negative marking, while there are some exams with negative marking.
Mostly, 4 marks are allotted for each correct answer and 1 mark is deducted for wrong answers. The exam span is about 2-3 hours. The syllabus of the exam depends on the course opted by the student. Here’s a table to show the syllabus of Polytechnic Entrance Exams of different courses-

Each state has a State Education Board which conducts the Polytechnic Entrance Exams. Hence, the scores of each respective state can be used in that particular state only. Joint Entrance Exams can be valid pan-India. Fresh scores will be considered for admission. For instance, the marks of 2017 shall be invalid for admission in 2018.
Polytechnic Entrance Test Syllabus
The syllabus of almost all the polytechnic courses are from the syllabus of 10th and 12th class. They generally include the following subjects-
- Math- Number System, Time and Distance, Time and Work, Simple Interest and Compound Interest, Statistics, Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations, Factorisation, Trigonometry, Heights and Distance; Area, Volume and Surface and Geometry.
- General Knowledge- famous games, monuments, historical events, current affairs
- Physics- Kinetics and Gravitation, Reflection and Refraction, Current Electricity, Electromagnetism, Concave and Convex Dynamics and Thermodynamics.
- Chemistry- Acid, Bases, Salt; Valency; Atomic Structure; Polymers; Detergents Drugs and Explosives; Periodic Classification of Elements and Catalysis.

Admission Procedure
The admission process for each Polytechnic Entrance Exam is generally through the online method. Below mentioned are some of the common admission procedures-
- The online application forms are made available on the official website of the respective Polytechnic Entrance Exam.
- Each course might have a different application form or a combined one.
- Students have to get registered and fill in their personal and academic details in the online form.
- The necessary documents must be uploaded and a print out of the form must be kept for safekeeping. Some institutes may demand the form to be sent to the respective exam office of the state. For instance, Haryana DET forms must be filled online and the copy must be sent to the HSTES Panchkula centre or any other form collection centre.
- The fee can be paid through Debit Card/Credit Card/Net Banking/e-Challan methods.
The examination fee range falls between Rs 200 – Rs 1150.
Counseling
The counseling period for each of the Polytechnic Entrance Exams is different due to the difference in the exam procedures and duration. Most of the counseling sessions commence between June – July and is conducted in several rounds.
For instance JEECUP 2018 counseling was conducted in the following manner-
- The candidates with the required scores are called to fix their admission seat for the chosen subject. Here, the documents of the candidate are verified.
- Round-I of the seas allotment takes place in the 2nd week of June.
- Round-II begins for registration and change of options by the 3rd week of June. The seats are allotted to those who wished to change their subjects of study and new admissions are taken.
- The 3rd round begins in the third week of June where vacant seats being filled.
- The fourth and last round lets students register and lock in choices for the remaining seats or seats left vacant by students who migrated to other streams. This procedure begins in the 1st week of July.
