Accreditation is a voluntary system of evaluation of higher education institutions and programs. It is indicates that the school, and its programs adhere to high quality standards based on latest research. The norms which are taken into account are student to faculty ratio, placement performance, number of books, number of computers, etc.

Why to attend accredited school

  1. Accreditation prepares school for continuous improvement. It also indicates that school meets certain quality parameters.
  2. Some multi-national recruiters place heavy importance on accreditation. So if you school is accredited then it will not only help you in your first job post-MBA but even after that.

How to check accreditation status

You can visit school website and check the mandatory disclosure on the website. You can also check the website of the accreditation agency to check the status. Accreditation is granted for a certain period of time. Ensure that accreditation has not expired.

National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) and National Board for Accreditation (NBA) are two accreditations available in India for MBA colleges.

NAAC - Provides accreditation of institutes and departments. The accreditation is provided on a five point scale for a period of 5 years.

NBA - Accreditation for programs that technical institutes provide. It is for the period of 2 years.

Though it preferable to choose an accredited school and program, there are some programs which enjoy good reputation in the industry but are not accredited. There are two reasons to this - First the accreditation process itself in India is slow and ineffective. This is evident from even accredited institutes coming under scrutiny. Second, some accreditation place constraints on the way the school conducts its programs. This has made top schools stay away from accreditation as they want certain level of autonomy in the way their program are run.
