The Tamil Nadu Open University was established in2002by Government of Tamil Nadu for the educational needs of students who have been deprived of and/or denied the access to higher education especially destitute, physically challenged, working men and women, economically weaker sections of the society, and those who discontinued education for various reasons, etc. In the main, it aims to reach the hitherto unreached.The University offers many Programmes in a wide variety of disciplines. The open university is a necessity to cater to the needs of the huge population of Tamil Nadu and to keep up the literacy rate.

The University, we understand has initiated steps for recruitment and the announcement of programmes, both of which would not have been possible without considerable ground work and are really commendable. We are sure the action of Government of Tamil Nadu will help us increase enrolments and move towards the targets of 10th Plan.'Currently, the university has a student strength of 5,29,263 in 134 Programmes of study across various disciplines and skills at different levels from Certificate to Post Graduate that are imparted through 13 academic schools, 5 Support Divisions, 1 Media Centre and a robust network of 400 Learner Support and Service Centres across the state. The University is affiliated to UGC.
