Government Medical College (GMC), Thrissur was established in 1982.The college was formally inaugurated on April 1, 1982 by the Honourable Governor of Kerala, Smt.Jyothi Vencatachellum, who had also laid the foundation stone for the proposed college building at Mulagunnathukavu on 30 April 1982. Govt.Medical College, Thrissur had its humble beginning at Mannuthy. By March 1983, the institution had moved to its permanent site at Mulagunnathukavu, where the old buildings of the T.B sanatorium were suitably modified to accommodate the pre clinical and the para clinical departments as well as the administrative block.

The clinical departments started functioning on 22 October 1983 in the erstwhile District Hospital & Maternity Hospital buildings in Thrissur town. In April 1, 1985, the entire District Hospital was taken over on 1 April 1985. Construction of the 300 bedded Medical College Chest Hospital at Mulagunnathukavu was completed in 1987. The primary health centre of Tholur was taken over by the college in 1986, for regular training of medical students in community and preventive care. Ollur & Erumappetty primary health centres were also made available for training purposes. Construction of the 400-bed New Medical College Hospital was started on 1995.

The first batch of 74 students was admitted to the college in April 1982 who completed their course in the May 1987. The college was granted permanent recognition by IMC in 1991 and by WHO in 1993. In January 1995 construction of a new hospital complex was started in M.G Kavu.M.D. Radiodiagnosis courses were started in 1997 & MD general medicine courses were started in 2004.In 2005 December the clinical departments were shifted from District Hospital to the New Medical College Hospital Complex in Mulagunnathukavu.The college celebrated its Silver Jubilee in the year 2007.

Aims & Objectives :-

Introduction

Thrichur Medical College Alumni Association is an organization of the past and present students of Thrice Medical College and the Teachers who served as faculty in this august institution. As per the byelaw, this organization is committed to the academic and infrastructural development of the Alma mater. It is not a private organization in any sense of the word, and is against the privatization of the Medical College or part thereof.

Activities

TMCAA is unique in that it has made pioneering steps in realization of its ideals, as envisaged in the byelaws. TMCAA is established to conduct activities supporting the academic and infrastructural development of the Alma mater.

Eligibility

To pursue MBBS/BDS at Government Medical College students must satisfy following eligibility criteria.

The candidate should be 17 years old (as on 31st December of the admission year). He/She should have appeared for an exam cosidered to be equivalent to 10+2 Higher Secondary Exam and studied PCB (Physics, Chemistry and Biology). The candidate should have studied English at 10+2 level. Candidate satisfying any of the following criteria are also eligible -

1) Candidates who have appeared for Intermediate examination in science with subjects PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and English. Those who have appeared for pre-professional/pre-medical exams with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English and have appeared for 10+2 Higher Secondary Exam or intermediate exam are also eligible.

2) Candidates who have passed the first year of a 3 year degree course with subjects - Physics, Chemistry, Biology are also eligible.

3)Candidates who have passed B.Sc. (Bachelor of Science) exam with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and who have cleared 10+2 Higher Secondary Exam with PCB are also eligible.

Admission Procedure

MBBS/BDS Course -

Marks obtained in Maths are not considered for admission into the MBBS course.

Please note that in a non-governmental institutes, 50% of the seats will be filled by management of the institute. Academic merit should be considered while granting admission under management quota. Rest 50% seats will be filled by competent authority based on the academic merit of the candidate.

Academic merit of a candidate will be determined based on the performance in competitive exam conducted by the state governemnt or competent authority or centralized competitive exam conducted at the national level.

Candidate must score at least 50% marks in the competitive exam. For SC/ST/OBC candidates the minimum percentage required is 40%.

For post-graduation courses, performance in first, second and MBBS exam can be considered to determine the academic eligibility of the candidate.
