 Jamia Milia Islamia University is a public central university . Established in Aligarh as early as 1920s during the Independence Movement, Jamia Millia University, now in New Delhi. It provides various programs both in its regular and distance mode. Over the years it has steadily expanded to finally include its Centre of Distance and Open Learning in 2008. Aimed at individuals who cannot attend regular classes, especially the Armed Forces, it offers distance education courses to over 4000 enrolled candidates every year.

Admission and Application Procedure

  1.  Admission Procedure: The following steps need to be followed for admission to one of the distance education programmes –
  2. Read the prospectus carefully. The prospectus can be downloaded from the official website.
  3. Download the appropriate application form for the subject opted for from http://jmi.ac.in/studyatjamia/admission/29. Please note that only downloaded application forms with the code ‘JMI-WADF-<Year of Application>’ (Ex-JMI-WADF-2016) will be accepted. No photocopies are allowed. The form can also be obtained from the CDOL office at Jamia Millia Islamia or one of the study centres.

Filled-in forms, along with supporting documents and the application fee must be submitted to the CDOL office or any of the study centres before the last date.

Important: Application form for Indian defence personnel – The Army and the Navy are available separately. Please check the relevant links on the official website.

Online/Offline: Application forms can be downloaded online or obtained in-person from ‘Maktaba Jamia Limited, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi’ or one of its study centres.

Application fee: Please read this carefully. For ‘downloaded application forms’, the application fee is Rs.500 (B.Ed programme) or Rs.300 (All other programmes). For ‘forms obtained from the Maktaba Jamia Ltd. Office’, the fee is Rs.700 (B.Ed programme) or Rs.500 (All other programmes).

Mode of Payment: The fee can either be submitted in cash or by Demand Draft in favour of ‘Jamia Millia Islamia’ payable at New Delhi. Please contact the office before payment is made.

Note: Applications will only be accepted during working hours on weekdays. Please ensure that all documents are submitted on time.

Supporting documents: Self-attested photocopies of the following documents need to be submitted along with the application form –

  • Date of Birth Certificate
  • Class 10th mark sheet
  • Class 12th mark sheet
  • Certificate and Mark sheets of graduation (for PG courses only)
  • 1 passport-sized colour photograph, to be pasted on the form

The following documents need to be submitted at the time of admission along with the above for verification –

  •  3 passport-sized colour photographs
  • Experience certificate (if applicable)
  • SC/ST certificate
  • Character certificate from previous institution
  • Migration/Transfer certificate
  • DD for the programme fee, with the candidate’s name, application number and program code written at the back of the DD
  • Proof of Enrolment (for students of Jamia Millia Islamia only)
  • NOC from previous employer (if applicable)

The following additional documents are required from Foreign students/ NRIs –

  • Copy of Passport
  • Translations of mark sheets, if not in English
  • Translated and attested copy of Resident Permit
  • NRI Status certificate. Please check with the Advisor’s office  (details below) to obtain a complete list of documents.
  • Medical Certificate (for PwD candidates only)

Address: The documents will have to be submitted in-person to ‘Maktaba Jamia Limited, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi’ or any of the study centres.

Last date for application? The last date for submission of the complete application packet is 31st August, 2016. An extension till 20th September, 2016 can be provided with a late fee of Rs.200.

Fee Structure

Course Fees: The course fee for most of the postgraduate courses lie in the range from Rs.7800-Rs.14000. For Bachelor’s degree programmes, the fee ranges in Rs.7200-8800. B.Ed is the only programme which costs Rs.30000 for two years. PG Diploma and Certificate courses cost Rs.5600-Rs.15500. PG Diploma in Geo-informatics (PGDGI) is another special course with a total fee of Rs.36200.

For students from other countries/ NRIs, the fee can range anywhere between $300-600.

COMMON QUESTIONS (Regarding fee)

a)When does the fee need to be paid?

Ans.For all courses except B.Ed and PGDGI, the fee needs to be paid in full at the beginning of the course. For B.Ed, the course fee is divided into equal installments, payable at the beginning of each year. For PGDGI, Rs.20200 is to be paid during admission and the remaining Rs.16000 is paid in January (the following semester).

b) Can it be paid in installments?

Ans. No, installments are available for the B.Ed and PGDGI courses only.

Scholarships

No scholarships are available for students in the distance education programmes. However, JMI being an institution under the Central Government, may provide a limited number of scholarships to minority and reserved category students. Please contact the admissions office for further details.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Age Criteria: There is no upper age limit for admission to any of the programmes.
  2. Reservation Criteria:

a) Reservation of seats is applicable for SC/ST candidates of any religion seeking admission to the B.Ed programme only as per Central Government norms. There will also be a relaxation of 5% marks in the eligibility criteria.

b) JMI being a minority institution, 30% of the seats are reserved for Muslim applicants in each course, 10% of which will be women candidates.

c)Additional 10% of the seats are reserved for Muslim OBC – Non-creamy layer/ ST

d)3% of the seats are reserved for physically challenged candidates, who exhibit blindness/ low vision, hearing impairment, locomotor disability or cerebral palsy. PwD candidates will also receive 5% relaxation in the qualifying examinations.

e)5%of undergraduate, Diploma and Certificate programmes will be reserved for internal students of Jamia schools.

Note: The number of seats available for programmes will depend on the capacity of the study centre. Also, B.Ed has a maximum intake of 50. Please check the prospectus for additional criteria applicable to defence personnel.

The following table shows the minimum eligibility criteria for admission to the various programmes on offer by the university –

B.Ed Candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria in addition to Bachelor’s degree with 50% marks:

(i)Master’s degree in Science/ Social Science/ Commerce/ Humanities

(ii)Trained in-service elementary teacher

(iii)Completed NCTE recognized teacher education programme in classroom contact mode

PG Diploma in Guidance &Counselling Candidate must satisfy one of the following:

(i)Bachelor’s degree with 50% marks

(ii) Bachelor’s degree with 45% marks+ Master’s degree with 50% marks

(iii)Bachelor’s degree+ 2 years of full-time engagement in recognized school/ hospital

Certificate in CIT/ CCHNT 10th grade or equivalent

Approval

Jamia Millia University has been accredited ‘Grade A’ by NAAC. The programmes under CDOL are approved by the UGC and the Distance Education Bureau (DEB), New Delhi.

Distance MBA Course

The university does not offer MBA in distance education mode. However, it does have a Master of Arts (M.A) course in Human Resource Management.
