Overview:

GATE or Graduate Aptitude Test In Engineering is a national test conducted by Indian Institute of Science and IIT’s for admission to various post graduate courses in the field of engineering and techology. The exam was introduced in the year 1984 and since then has been one of the most competitive examinations in the country.The exam nowdays is also being used to select engineers for entry level jobs in various government offices.The examination is organised once a year and students can choose his field in which he wants to pursue his post graduation.

Exam Structure:

The Examination consists of 65 questions that are to be answered in the time limit of 3 hours. Since the year 2014 the examination has been completely shifted to online pattern. Now the candidates are needed to answer objective type and numerical type questions which appear on screen in random manner.

The candidates can chose to appear for GATE in any of the 23 below mentioned fields:

  • Architecture & Planning (AR)
  • Mathematics (MA)
  • Biotechnology (BT)

  • Sci & Information Tech (CS)

The candidate has to choose any one of the above mentioned subjects and questions are asked in from concepts used in these subjects. Every paper contains 10 aptitude based questions from each subjects apart from the other core topics.

Eligibility Criteria:

The candidate who have obtained a valid graduation degree in any discipline are eligible for this examination. They should possess the degree from the Universities recongnised by the Govt. Of India. Final and Pre Final Year students are also eligible to apply for this examination.

How To Apply

The candidates who wish to appear for the GATE examination need to apply online. To register and apply for this examination the candidate need to visit this link. After visiting the link you are required to register yourself with a valid mail ID. Once you register a link will be sent to you where you will be required to choose your password.

Once you log in through your email and password you will be required to fill in the application form. Here you will be required to fill in your personal details and select the subject in which you wish to appear for your examination.

Once the filling of form has been completed you will be required to make payment of Rs. 1500 either through net banking or through bank challan. Once you make the payment then you will be required to download the form. Two pages would appear, first would contain the address and location where you need to send in the hard copy. Second would a contain a certificated that you might need to get signed by your principal.

After the sign by your principal and attach all the asked document you will be required to send the form to the address mentioned.

Admission Procedure

After the score for this examination is declared the candidates are required to apply to the college for admission when the notice is released.

No separate counselling is held after this examination. The selection procedure is decided by the institute where you are applying.

Syllabus For Examination

The examination consists of questions asked from the subjects chosen by the candidate. Questions comprise of topic that are taught during the graduation to the student. First ten questions are based on the general aptitude of the subject. Other questions are asked from the core topics of the subject.

Results

The result of the candidate are declared after a month of appearing for the examination. The candidate receives an All India Rank plus a score card where his obtained score is mentioned alongwith section wise cut off.

The score card is provided only to the qualified candidates i.e the candidates who have obtained a score more than the cutoff score.

Score Validity

GATE score is valid for 3 years from the date of announcement of results.

Reservation and Seat Distribution

To help provide equal oppurtunities to the students reservations would be provided for admission to IIT’s and IISc. 30% of the total seats would be reserved for the OBC cateogary and 15% of the seats are reserved for the SC/ST cateogary. Some seats are reserved for the people with physical disabilities as well.

Counselling and Admission Procedure

Once the result of GATE has been declared and the score card has been obtained, the candidates can apply at various institutes as soon as the admission notification is realeased.

No separate counselling for the same is organised by either by the government or by any other authorities. The selection or counselling procedure may vary from institute to institute, but in most of the cases only Personal Interview is held. After successful completion of this round the candidates are required to submit all their original documents and after verification admission letter is offered.
