What is IMUCET?

IMU CET stands for Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test. It is an entrance examination conducted by the Indian Maritime University, which was established in 2008. The examination is conducted for those candidates who seek admission in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the marine field at Indian Maritime University and its affiliated institutions.

IMU campuses are present in these cities:

 Structure of IMUCET exam

IMU CET will be conducted as a computer-based examination. The examination will be conducted in the first week of June 2018 in selected cities of India. The test will be will be having questions from these papers:

  • English
  • General Knowledge
  • General Aptitude
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry

Questions: There will be 25 questions each in English, General Knowledge, General Aptitude, and Chemistry while Physics and Mathematics papers will consist of 50 questions each. The duration of the exam will be 3 hours.

Marks: The questions will be of objective type consisting of four options with only one correct response. One mark will be given for a correct answer. There will be no negative marking for an incorrect response to a particular question.

Medium: The medium of the examination will be English only.

IMUCET 2018 Eligibility Criteria

Following is the laid down eligibility criteria for IMU CET 2018: –

  • The minimum age limit is 17 years.
  • The maximum age should not be greater than 25 years on or before 1st August 2018.
  • Candidates have to apply for a passport before seeking admission.
  • The candidates who are interested in taking admission in marine courses will have to obtain a medical certificate supporting their fitness by a doctor approved by Director General of Shipping.
  • Appearing candidates are also eligible for IMU CET provided that they have to pass their qualifying examination by 31st May 2018.

Physical Fitness:

  • The candidates who are interested in taking admission in marine courses will have to obtain a medical certificate supporting their fitness by a doctor approved by Director General of Shipping.
  • Candidates must meet the fitness criteria laid down by DGS guidelines. Those candidates who are suffering from any type of disability will not be considered for admission in marine courses.

Eye Sight:

  • A good binocular vision is required.
  • The vision should be 6/6 (normal) in each eye separately.
  • Candidates who will opt for B. Tech (Marine Engineering) degree course, their vision should be unaided 0.5 (6/12) in each eye or 0.67 (6/9) in the better eye and 0.33 (6/18) in the other eye.
  • An applicant applying for DNS, B.Sc. (Nautical Science) & B.Sc. (Maritime Science) degree course should have a vision unaided 1.0 (6/6) in the better eye and 0.67 (6/9) in the other eye.

Eligibility Course Wise-

For Diploma in Nautical Sciences (DNS):

  • Candidates have to pass their 12th examination or an equivalent examination with minimum 60% marks with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as their subjects.

Or

  • Candidates must be having B.Sc./B.Tech degree from an AICTE recognized university. B.Sc. students must be having a degree in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics with Electronics and Physics as their subjects in one of the years.
  • In B.Sc./B.Tech the minimum percentage required is 50%.

For B.Sc:

  • Candidates have to pass their 10+2 or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as their major subjects.
  • Minimum percentage required in PCM is 60%.
  • Candidates must be having at least 50% marks in English.

For B.Tech (Lateral Entry):

  • Candidates must be having a diploma in engineering.

For M.B.A:

  • Candidates have to past their bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
  • Minimum marks required for graduation is 50%.
  • At least 50% marks are required in English at 10th/12th/Graduation level.

For B.Tech:

  • Candidates must have passed 10+2 or any equivalent examination without any compartmental subjects.
  • Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English has to be compulsory subjects.
  • A minimum of 60% marks is to be secured in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics whereas at least 50% marks is required in English.

For B.Tech:

  • Candidates have to pass their graduation from a recognized university.
  • Minimum of 60% marks is required in the qualifying examination.

SC/ST candidates will get a relaxation of 5% in terms of requirement of minimum percentage in the qualifying exam.

Application forms and submission procedure

Step-1: Candidates will have to register themselves online by visiting the official website of IMU CET. The registration will begin in the first week of April 2018 and will stay active until the second week of May 2018.

Step-2: Candidates are required to upload their scanned photograph, signature, 10th standard mark sheet photocopy and category certificate (SC/ST, if applicable) in the prescribed format.

Step-3: Candidates are expected to download and print the filled-in application in a standard format (preferably pdf). After the successful submission of the application form, a confirmation e-mail or SMS will be sent to the candidates.

Application Fee

The examination fees are Rs 1,000/- for general candidates. Candidates having SC/ST certificate are required to pay Rs 750/- as examination fees. The payment window will be available from the second week of April 2018 until the third week of May 2018. Applicants can pay the examination fees using either online or offline mode. Following are the available options for payment of fees:

  • Credit Card
  • Debit Card
  • Net Banking
  • E- Challan

The examination fee is non-refundable. In no case, the request for refund of examination fees will be considered by exam conducting body.

Here is the gist of the steps involved in online application:

  • Fill the online form with correct details by registering on the official website
  • Upload your recently clicked coloured passport sized photograph, signature, 10th standard mark sheet photocopy and category certificate (SC/ST, if applicable).
  • Complete the payment process by using a preferred mode.
  • Download the confirmation page with your application number on it.

Admit Card

Candidates will be able to download their admit card from the official website in the third week of May 2018. Candidates are advised to regularly check the official website regarding the same. They have to appear for the test at the specified test center only. In no case, the test city or the test venue will be changed for a candidate.

Candidates must be in possession of their application number in order to download the admit card. Admit card will not be mailed to the candidate or no separate communication will be done regarding this. Only those candidates who have successfully completed the payment process will be issued admit cards. No duplicate admit card will be issued in case the admit card is lost.

The admit card will bear the following information-

  • Roll Number
  • Name
  • Father’s Name
  • Photograph
  • Test City
  • Test center address
  • Test timings along with the reporting time.

IMU CET is scheduled to be conducted in the 1st week of June 2018. The examination will be conducted only once. Hence, those candidates who don’t turn up for the examination will be automatically disqualified from the selection process.

Admission Procedure

After the successful completion of the test, a merit list will be released of shortlisted candidates by IMU. Successful candidates will then have to register themselves for online counselling. Online counselling will be conducted for IMU campuses only.

For admission in IMU affiliated institutes, the candidate has to himself/herself approach the institute. While attending the counselling procedure, candidates have to ensure that they are in possession of all the required documents. Following is the distribution of reserved seats:

Notification

The notification for IMU CET 2018 has not been released yet but last year i.e. in the year 2017, the Registration for both the UG and PG programs opened on the 25th of March. The registration went on until 8thMay 2017.

Syllabus

The syllabus and pattern for each CET vary according to the program one wishes to be admitted into. The following table indicates the syllabus.

Common Online CET for all UG Programmes [except BBA (Logistics, Retailing, and E-Commerce) programme] ·         No. of Questions – 200 multiple choice questions.

·         Syllabus – English, General Aptitude, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics at Plus 2 level.

Common Online CET for the MBA (Port and Shipping Management), MBA (International Transportation and Logistics) and the M.Sc (Commercial Shipping and Logistics) programmes ·         No. of Questions – 120 multiple choice questions.

·         Syllabus – Quantitative ability, Data interpretation, Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning.

Common Online CET for M.Tech (Marine Technology and Management), M.Tech (Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering) and M.Tech (Dredging and Harbour Engineering) programmes ·         No. of Questions – 120 multiple choice questions.

·         Syllabus – English, Mathematics and one of Mechanical Engineering/Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering/Civil Engineering.

The questions in all the different CET’s will be of multiple choice type. There will be no negative marking for wrong answers.

List of colleges accepting IMUCET score

The India Maritime Universities located in 5 cities accept the IMU CET score [For respective UG and PG programs]. They are:

  • India Maritime University, Chennai
  • India Maritime University, Mumbai
  • India Maritime University, Cochin

  • India Maritime University, Kolkata

Besides this, there are also affiliate institutes that accept these scores. But, the counseling procedure for these institutes varies from that of IMUs. There are a total of 24 such colleges. Some examples of these institutes are:

IMUCET Results

Last year the IMU CET result was declared on the 31st of May, 2017. The dates for IMU CET 2018 are yet to be released but they will be around that time frame. The result can be obtained from the official website which is http://www.imu.edu.in/index.php?id=1.

Cut-Off

The Indian Maritime University does not declare any kind of cut off marks for admission to its various campuses. Rather, it just lets the candidate know whether they have qualified for admission or not. Hence there is a qualifying rank as opposed to qualifying mark.

But, each program in each campus has a varying cutoff after each list based on the category of the candidate.

Score Validity

The score from IMU CET is valid only for the duration of 1 year i.e. on appearing for IMU CET 2018 that score will only be valid for admission for the academic year 2018-2019.

Reservation/Seat Distribution

The reservation for various programs across the IMU campuses is 15% of the total seats are reserved for eligible candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), 7.5% of Scheduled Tribe (ST) and 27% Seats are reserved for Other Backward Class (OBC) candidates belonging to Non- creamy layer (NCL).

Besides this, a regional reservation also exists. Some UG seats are reserved for candidates from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands, Eight North Eastern States (including Sikkim) and Jammu & Kashmir.

A maximum number of seats reserved in a given Academic Year for the U.G Program across all the IMU Campuses should be as follows:

  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands – 20 seats
  • Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands – 10 seats
  • Eight North Eastern States (including Sikkim) – 40 seats
  • Jammu and Kashmir – 10 seats
