The university was initially established as the Andhra Pradesh Open University in 1982 by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. It was subsequently renamed to BR Ambedkar Open University in 1991. It was the first Open University in India established by an Act of State Legislature.

The university offers an opportunity to pursue higher education without any restrictions of age, gender and occupation. The university aims to education students who are not able to pursue education in formal system.

The university has a network of 200 study centers, and the total number of students on its rolls amounts to be about 4,50,000.

All programs offered by the university are recognized by UGC and these programs are open to all citizens of the country. But the area of operation of the University is confined to the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh only.

The university uses multiple media besides printed material to deliver its course material.

Salient Features

  • Multi-media Approach – University has a multi-media approach for instruction which includes printed Programs material, radio lessons, audio and video lessons, contact – cum – counseling classes, winter and summer schools for intensive coaching by experts. Printed material is sent through courier to postal address mentioned by the student in the application form.
  • Online Course Material – University communicates with students through email. It has published 250 volumes of Programs materials, covering as many as 30 different disciplines.
  • TV Channel – University conducts teleconforence through Doordarshan Yadagiri and Sapthagiri Channels on every Sunday from 2.00 p.m to 3.00 p.m. Detailed schedule is available on university website.
  • Radio – Tele-lessons and radio lectures are broadcast (All India Radio, Hyderabad-A) from Monday to Sunday. Schedule is available on university website.
  • Counselling – Contact-cum-Counselling sessions are conducted at study centers.

Admission Procedure 2023-24

The admission procedure for distance education courses is conducted online. Students can apply and pay fees online and submit documents at study centers.

STEP 1 – Online Application

Students wishing to seek admission have to visit the university portal at www.braouonline.in to access the application form for the online registration. Admission prospectus can be download from university website free of cost.

For UG students, the university has an online application verification system. While filling the application, the student needs to enter the hall ticket number of Intermediate or 10+2 or 3 year – polytechnic or TS/AP Open School System. The system will verify the number and display a message. If the student does not have this number or the number is not verified, then the student is required to visit the nearest Learner Support Center (LSC).

STEP 2 – Document Submission

Student needs to upload self-attested copies of the certificate on the university website.

The print out of the filled in admission form along with self attested photocopies of necessary documents need to be submitted at the study center where the student wishes to seek admission. Course wise list of study centers is available at the BR Ambedkar Open University online portal.

Necessary documents include –

  • Matriculation (Class 10th) certificate for proof of Date of Birth,
  • SSC marks-sheet for educational qualification
  • Caste certificate, if applicable.

STEP 3 Fee Payment

The fee payment has to be made through the TS / AP Online Center or through your debit or credit card. No fee payment is to be made in cash at the study center.

Courses Offered and Fee Structure

BR Ambedkar Open University offers certificate, diploma, degree and post-graduate programs in distance mode in arts, commerce, science, and business administration disciplines.

Under Graduate Programs

The university offers BA, BCom and BSc degree programs at the UG level. The fee structure for BA, BSc, BCom courses offered by BR Ambedkar Open University for year 2023-24 is given below.

  • All these fees are in addition to the tuition fee and must be paid along with it.

The MBA course offered by the University costs Rs.30,300/- for the complete courses in 2023-24. The fee can be paid in two installments of Rs.15,000 and Rs.15,300/- each.

MA in Telugu, Hindi, Urdu Graduate with respective language as second language. For Hindi, exams recognized as equivalent to BA by state/center such as Hindi Vidwaan are also recognized as eligible 2 – 4 years
M.Com Bachelor’s degree in commerce or BBA/ BBM or BA (Commerce) 2 – 4 years
M.Sc. Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Bachelor’s degree with mathematics 2 – 4 years
M.Sc. in Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Physics Bachelor’s degree with the respective subject or one of its branches or equivalent 2 – 4 years

Last date to apply for admission to distance programs at BRAOU is 31st July 2023.

Approvals and Rankings

The university has been accorded recognition from the Distance Education Board (DEB), University Grants Commission (UGC). BR Ambedkar Open University is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU), Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICODE).

Scholarships

All state and central government scholarship schemes are applicable. The university does not offer any other scholarships.

A fee waiver system is in place for physically challenged students. Interested students are requested to approach the Andhra Pradesh State Physically Handicapped Office for fee reimbursement.

Distance MBA Program

The distance MBA program was started at Ambedkar Open University in 1993. The program caters to fresh graduates and working professionals and helps them develops skills such as logical thinking, critical analysis, resolution of complex managerial problems. It further helps them become better as decision making and propel their career to the next level.

Distance MBA Course Structure and Syllabus

Distance MBA is a 2 year program which can be completed in maximum 4 years. The program is conducted in semester pattern. There are total 25 courses including 4 specialization courses.

Eligibility for Distance MBA

  • Students with valid rank in TS / AP ICET (Integrated Common Entrance Test for MBA & MCA) conducted by both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh States or BRAOUMBAET conducted by Dr. BRAOU are eligible for admission into distance MBA course.
  • The ICET rank is valid for admission in the same year in which exam was written.
  • 50% of the seats are reserved for fresh graduates and rest 50% are reserved for candidates with experience (in-service candidates).
  • Candidate should have passed bachelor’s degree from a recognized university with at least 50% marks (45% in case of reserved category students).
  • Candidates from  Engineering / Technology, Architecture, Medicine, Pharmacy, and Law are also eligible. Charted Accountants / Cost & Works Accountants / Company Secretaries are also eligible.

In-Service Candidates –

Candidates should have minimum 3 years of experience in Supervisory / Middle level / Top Level Management in an organised sector. Only those candidates with a bachelor’s degree like BA, BCom, BCA, BBA, BE, BTech, BPharm, or any other 3 or 4 year degree  Oriental Languages are eligible provided that they have scored at least 50% at the graduation level (45% for reserved category candidates).

To apply for distance MBA program, candidates need a valid rank in TS / AP ICET-2019 conducted by both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh States. Admission are conducted at the study-center level and candidates can opt for any center.

Total course fee for Distance MBA program by Ambedkar Open University is Rs. 30,300/- in 2023-24. First year fee is Rs. 15,000 and second year fee is Rs.15,300/-.
