The university was initially established as the Andhra Pradesh Open University in 1982 by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, which was subsequently renamed to BR Ambedkar Open University 1991. The university has a network of 200 study centers, and the total number of students on its rolls amounts to be about 4,50,000.


The following list of programs is offered by the university. The students are advised to check their eligibility for the desired course before applying for it. Also, check the medium of instruction for your desired course, because English as a medium of instruction is not available for all courses. Starting from session 2017-18, the university has stopped supplying its application forms in a physical format. Students wishing to seek admission have to visit the university portal at to access the application form for the online registration. The print out of the filled in admission form along with self attested photocopies of necessary documents need to be submitted at the study center where the student wishes to seek admission. Course wise list of study centers is available at the BR Ambedkar Open University online portal.

Necessary documents include matriculation (Class 10th) certificate for proof of Date of Birth, SSC marks-sheet for educational qualification, and caste certificate, if applicable. The fee payment has to be made through the TS / AP Online Center or through your debit or credit card. No fee payment is to be made in cash at the study center. For admission forms, visit

The eligibility criteria for various courses are mentioned as follows.

BA,B.Com Pass in intermediate or equivalent OR pass in eligibility test
B.Sc Intermediate with science OR one year experience in any science and/ or technology organization.
MA in History, Economics, Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology, English Graduate in any subject
MA in Telugu, Hindi, Urdu Graduate with respective language as second language. For Hindi, exams recognized as equivalent to BA by state/center such as Hindi Vidwaan are also recognized as eligible
M.Com Bachelor’s degree in commerce or BBA/ BBM or BA (Commerce)
M.Sc. Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Bachelor’s degree with mathematics
M.Sc. in Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Physics Bachelor’s degree with the respective subject or one of its branches or equivalent
M.Sc. Environmental Sciences Graduate in any discipline of science or equivalent
M.Sc. Psychology Bachelor’s degree in any subject as recognized by UGC or equivalent
B.Ed. Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from any university recognized by the UGC and a minimum of two years’ teaching experience as a regular or temporary teacher in any primary/ middle or high school recognized by the state/ center/ government/ union territory
MBA Admission through ICET (Common Entrance Test)
MBA (Hospital and Healthcare Management) Any graduate – medical/ non- medical other than oriental languages and fine arts from a recognized university with 50% marks. Entrance test followed by group discussion and interview.
Bachelors in Library and Information Sciences Bachelor’s degree with work experience in a library OR graduate with certificate/ diploma course in Library and Information Sciences OR 50% marks in graduation OR professional graduation in law/ engineering/ pharmacy
M.LISc. B.LISc. degree with 40% or higher
All postgraduate diploma programs Bachelor’s degree in any subject
Certificate programs Pass in intermediate. For NGO Management,  3 years’ experience in any private organization is also required.

Following dates are important for admissions for the session 2017-18:

  • Start of online admission – 29th June
  • Last date of online admission – 4th August
  • Last date of online admissions with late fee of Rs. 200 – 5th October


The university has been accorded recognition from the Distance Education Board (DEB), University Grants Commission (UGC). BR Ambedkar Open University is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU), Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICODE).


A fee waiver system is in place for physically challenged students.
