What is GMAT?

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is an international management test conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council. GMAT 2018 is conducted for admission to various management colleges in India and abroad. The exam gives the candidates access to 2,500 B-schools across the world in over 7000 programs including MBA, Master in Finance, Master of Accounting and Master of Data Analytics.

GMAT 2018 is a computer-based evaluation test of 3.5 hours duration. It is also one of the oldest examinations introduced back in 1953. More than 2,50,000 students undertake the test in a single year, and the score of this examination is accepted in 34 cities in India and in over 112 countries worldwide.

In this article, we will be providing the detailed information about the exam structure, eligibility criteria, test centres, application procedure, important dates, results and more.

Structure of GMAT exam

Important Note- Earlier the exam used to be of 3 hours and 30 minutes, but now it is of 3 hours and 7 minutes with 2 breaks of 10 minutes.

GMAT 2018 lasts for 3 hours and 7 minutes and consists of 90 objective-type questions. In total the exam consists of 4 sections. Each section needs to be completed within the allotted time and only once completed the candidate can move to another section. The total score of the exam is 800 marks.

Regarding the order of taking up the sections, the candidate can only choose one among the 3 options mentioned below-

  • Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative, Verbal

OR

  • Verbal, Quantitative, Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment

OR

  • Quantitative, Verbal, Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment

GMAT 2018 Eligibility Criteria

As per the official website, GMAT does not have any eligibility criterion whatsoever regarding the age, gender, nationality or academic qualifications. Though, all candidates below the age of 18 years should provide a written consent from their parent/guardian.

Although it must be noted, that the eligibility criterion of business schools may vary from institute to institute. The B-school in India accepts GMAT scores along with other eligibility factors which include the academic background and work experience.

For Eg- SP Jain Institute of Management and Research accepts GMAT score along with a graduate degree with 50% aggregate and work experience of minimum 5-year duration.

Application forms and submission procedure

The candidates, who wish to appear for the GMAT 2018, can give the exam at any day of their choice. All they need to do is book their slot beforehand and appear for the exam. It is to be noted that the there should at least be a 16 day break between 2 attemps with a maximum of 5 attempts in a year.

Below is a step by step process of registration-

STEP-1: The first step is to log in to the official website for GMAT 2018 and click on “TAKE THE GMAT Exam”.

STEP-2: Next, you have to fill in the application form where initially candidate has to enter their details (mentioned in the image below). Post this candidate has to provide personal and communication details. Once done, create your login ID and password.

STEP-3: Using these details, log in to your account and pay the application/exam fee of Rs $250. The fee can be paid through-

  • Net banking
  • Debit/Credit card (VISA/MASTERCARD/AMERICAN EXPRESS/JCB)
  • On Call ($10 extra)
  • Postal Mail (Cheque or Money order)
  • Fax

STEP-4: The final step is to book the date and place of the exam. Once you log in you will be required to select the test date of the examination and then would be required to choose the centre for the same.

Registration through Phone

One can also schedule the GMAT examination through phone by calling VUE Customer care 3 days before they wish to take the exam. The payment in this case will be done on the link provided by the executive through credit or debit card. An additional $ 10 surcharge is charged in this case.

Admission Procedure

Once the GMAT exam is completed, the candidate has to select the programs at the center itself. Below mentioned is the admission process for GMAT 2018-

  • Post completion of the exam, the candidate will have a score displayed on their screen.
  • Now, the candidate has 2 options, either to accept the score or cancel/reject it. If they decide to accept the GMAT score, it will be sent to 5 institutes of the candidate’s choice. If rejected, the score will not be sent to any institute and the candidate can retake the exam at a later date.
  • The B-school will shortlist the students and notify them through email or telephonic call. Though other factors considered by colleges are academic back ground, work experience, letter of recommendation, statement of purpose and a final interview.

It is to be noted that if the candidate decides to send his/her score to more than 5 institutes, an additional fee of 35$ needs to be paid.

Syllabus

GMAT is an on-demand examination, meaning, it can be taken up any time during the year by booking an available date/time slot. The candidates are allowed to attempt this examination five times during a year and 8 times during the lifetime.

GMAT 2018 Important Dates

There are no fixed or pre-mentioned dates of GMAT examination. A candidate can appear for the examination throughout the year, but a maximum of 5 attempts are allowed in a single year. The candidate is required to register himself three days before he wished to take the exam and can then arrive at the test centre for the same.

The results of the examination are usually delivered within 20 days after appearing for the examination.

GMAT Result

The GMAT result is available on the same day you have appeared for the test. Four separate score cards are provided to the students for four different sections along with a total score out of 800.

The official result of GMAT will be available to the candidate within 20 days of the day of the exam. Then it will send to you as well the B-schools you have chosen. It will contain your score along with your percentile.

Important Points-

  • The Analytical Writing and Integrated Reasoning section does not contain any marks out of 800. They have a 0-6 and 1-8 rating scale respectively.
  • The Official GMAT score will only be available if the candidate has accepted the unofficial score on the day of the exam.

Score Validity

GMAT has a score validity of 5 years. But it is always prescribed not to have a score more than 2 years old.

Reservation/Seat Distribution

GMAT does not provide any sort of reservations. The ranks and admission are solely based on the performance of the candidate in the examination.

GMAT 2018 Counselling Schedule

Once the score of the GMAT examination is released then automatically the scores are sent to the five institutes free of cost. These institutes are selected by the students. Once the score is sent if the institute accepts the score obtained, then the students are called in for the further screening process.

The screening process includes Group Discussion followed by a Personal Interview. A candidate who successfully clears all the rounds with a good score is offered the admission letter to the university.
