 The University of Burdwan is a well-known public university in West Bengal, India.Today with 94 PG courses, 195 esteemed faculty and 222 colleges it is one of the biggest universities in west Bengal. Additionally ,offering a wide range of UG courses from Arts to music.

Also for students who cant pursue full-time course it offers Distance education under Directorate Of Distance Education (DDE) .

Its Directorate of Distance Education was established in 1994 mainly for employees who wanted to pursue their education while on a full-time job. As the first distance education system in the state, the DDE of Burdwan University has catered to thousands of students across India. 

Admission and Application Procedure

Burdwan University accepts online applications to their distance education programmes. There are three separate forms for Post-Graduation (PG), Bachelor of Education (B. Ed) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) studies.

Admission Procedure

  • Fill up the online application and submit. Make sure to note the application ID and password.
  • Take print out of the Bank Challan and deposit the fees mentioned in the Challan.
  • Within seven days (Two days in case of MBA applicants) of submission, login using the application ID and password to insert the Journal number and other details given in the copy of the Challan.
  • After verification of Journal number, login again and submit a scanned copy of passport and signature.
  • Go to the assigned DDE Administrative office or study center for verification of documents.
  • For the B. Ed course, a merit list is first published according to the eligibility criteria before document verification.

Application Fee: The application fee can be paid only through Bank Challan at the nearest State Bank of India branch. For B. Ed and MBA, the application fee is Rs. 500 and for PG courses, the fee ranges from Rs 5900 to Rs 11900, depending on the course and whether the applicant is already a Burdwan University student or not.

The following details are required for the online application-

  1. Scanned copy of a recent passport-sized photograph on light background
  2. Scanned copy of signature in black/blue pen
  3. A valid e-mail address and phone number 

After You Apply:

For completing the admission process, the candidate has to visit the assigned DDE Administration Office or Study Centre and submit the following original and photocopy documents for verification-

  1. Printout of the application form
  2. University and Student copy of the Bank Challan
  3. Admit Card of SF or equivalent
  4. Marksheet of SF or equivalent
  5. Marksheet of HS or equivalent
  6. Marksheet of UG course or equivalent
  7. Marksheet of PG course or equivalent (if applicable)
  8. BU Registration Certificate (for Burdwan University students only)
  9. Caste/PwD Certificate (if applicable)
  10. Valid MAT/CMAT/CAT/XAT or equivalent Management Aptitude Test Score (for MBA applicants)
  11. Marksheet/Certificate of NCTE Recognized Program (for B. Ed applicants)
  12. Certificate of MPhil/PhD (for B. Ed applicants)

For PG Courses, the course material would be supplied to the candidate immediately after verification at the center. For MBA candidates, an Entrance Test (in case valid MAT/ CMAT/ CAT/ XAT or equivalent are not available), Group Discussion and Personal Interview Rounds will be conducted for entrance to the MBA programme.

Last Date of Application:

 For PG programmes, the last date is 24th October. (11th November with a Fine of Rs. 200). B. Ed programme and MBA programme have deadlines 30th September 2016 and 16th February 2017 respectively.

·         Pass undergraduate in 10+2+3 system having offered the relevant subject as a combination/elective of 300 marks or more at degree stage and secured at least 35% marks, OR,

·         B.Sc/B.Com/B.A Pass undergraduate with Special B.A in relevant subject with 300 marks or more, securing at least 35% marks, OR,

·         Pass undergraduate in 10+2+2/10+1+3/11+3 system from any recognised institute who passed 1 year Bridge Course in relevant subject of 300 marks or more (Considered equivalent of 10+2+3) securing 40% marks, OR,

·         An M.A (Graduate) in a subject willing to pursue an additional M.A through distance education irrespective of the relevant subject studied or not. However, M.A in any professional subject like Music, Drama, Film Studies, Physical Education, General Education, etc., are not eligible. Furthermore, M.A in Islamic History and Culture/Ancient History and Culture or likewise from any university will not be able to pursue the M.A (History) course at BU.

·         Fresher candidates who have completed any one of the following NCTE programes – Diploma in Pre-School Education(DPSE)/ Diploma in Elementary Education(PTT)/ Bachelor of Elementary Education(B.El.Ed)/ Diploma in Physical Education(D.P.Ed)/ Diploma in Elementary Education(D.El.Ed)/ Diploma in Arts Education(Visual or Performing Arts)

6. MBA ·         Undergraduate student from any recognised university of the 10+2+3 system

·         Qualified MAT/ CMAT/ CAT/ XAT or equivalent management aptitude test, OR, Qualify the Entrance Test for MBA conducted by Burdwan University

Age Limit and Reservation:

  1. Candidates should not exceed 38 years till June of the year of application. There is relaxation of 5 years for PwD (Person with Disability) candidates.
  2. SC/ST/PwD candidates will have 5% relaxation in marks
  3. Reservation Rules – 22% and 6% of the total seats will be reserved for SC and ST candidates respectively. PwD candidates will have 3% reservation across all categories (both general and reserved).

Specialisation/ Courses Offered

The Directorate of Distance Education offers PG, B.Ed and MBA courses. Post graduate courses are offered in Bengali, English, Sanskrit, Geography, History, Political Science, Life Science, Physical Science, Mathematics, Commerce and Education.

Approval & Ranking

While the University of Burdwan is a ‘Grade A’ university approved by the NAAC, the distance education programmes are approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Distance Education Council(DEC).

The University of Burdwan is ranked 1,343 by the WOS under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and 2,415 by SCOPUS (Elsevier Publishing).

Last Date (Important Dates)

For Post Graduate admissions, the last date for submission is the third week of October every year, with an extension till first week of November by paying Rs. 200 late fee.

Date of submission of admission form for the B. Ed programme starts in the third week of August and continues till last week of September.

For the MBA programme:

Distance MBA Course

Particulars Details
Eligibility and Admission Procedure Any 10+2+3 undergraduate from a recognised university having qualified XAT/CMAT/MAT/CAT or equivalent OR the entrance examination conducted by Burdwan University. Selected candidates will have to appear for Group Discussion and Personal Interview rounds. The compounded score of the rounds will be considered and put up in a merit list and selected candidates can proceed to complete the admission process
Fee Structure The MBA programme costs Rs. 15000 per semester for four semesters. An additional cost of Rs. 200 per semester is applicable for students from other universities towards registration/restoration costs. Examination fee of Rs. 1000 per semester is required for all the students.
