The Bharathiar University is a public state university established in Coimbatore by the Government of Tamilnadu in February 1982 under the Bharathiar University Act, 1981. In 1985, it got recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) for grants. It provides graduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes in various subjects. It has been supported through research grants by the government agencies such as UGC-SAP, DST-FIST, DST-PURSE, DRDO and UGC.
