Dr Rafiuddin Ahmed was the founder of dental education not only in India but entire South East Asia. The nation owes him a great deal more than the Dental College which is the embodiment of his love for life. Rafiuddin Ahmed was born on December 24, 1890 at Bardhanpara, Dhaka. In 1906 the bold surefooted highly imaginative adventurous boy of sixteen set sail for Rangoon, Singapore and Hongkong after finishing schooling at Dhaka.
He told his classmates that he would join them in the college after his return from Honkong and Singapore. His Passion coupled with strong determination could do wonders. After reaching Calcutta, he went about looking for a suitable ship that would take him to his destination and bring him back. He thought it would be possible if he could pay the cost of passage with his labor. With confidence he boarded one ship after another, and talked to anyone he came across on the boat about the intention behind his visit. He studied the Exchange Gazette that gave the details of the movement of the boats.
He sailed in British India steamship, S.S.Dilwara boundfor Singapore and Hongkong. Working as a munshi or clerk to keep accounts. Rafiuddin’s condition was that he should be allowed to leave the ship when it returned to Calcutta after about two months. He was asked to report before midnight. He was little worried about not having shipping papers because he did not realize that it was steward’s headache for the profit he was going to make by not paying him any salary. One illegal hand could be easily hidden among sixty or so crewmen till the ship was out in the safe waters..
