What is NIFT?

NIFT stands for National Institute of Fashion Technology. This eminent institute is believed to be the pioneer in the fashion and apparel industry. It was established in the year 1986 and from 2006 it has become a statutory institute. It creates qualified professionals in the fashion design, management and technology fields. It has 16 campuses located across the country.

Every year NIFT conducts an entrance examination to filter the aspirants for the admission in design programmes. NIFT offers various courses like Bachelor of Design (B.Des), Bachelor Fashion Technology (BF.Tech), Master of Design (M.Des), Master of Fashion Technology (MF.Tech) and Master of Fashion Management (MFM).

NIFT also provides candidates with a chance to apply in the dual courses in a year. Apart from that, NIFT offers a Lateral Entry Admission Test through which an aspirant can directly get admission in the second year of B.Des and BFTech programmes.

NIFT offers below-mentioned specializations in the Bachelor of Design (BDse) programme.

  • Leather Design
  • Fashion Design
  • Textile design
  • Accessories Design
  • Fashion Communication and
  • Knitwear Design

Structure of NIFT exam

The exam includes 2 preliminary tests (CAT & GAT), group discussion and personal interview session. Candidates have to take note of the fact that for each of the courses offered by NIFT there is a different selection procedure.

For B.Des Exam Pattern

To apply for the Bachelor of Design course a candidate has to go through the preliminary tests:

  • CAT – Creative Ability Test, judges a candidates observation, innovation in development of concept and basic designing ability. Along with that a candidate’s skill in understanding and using colors is also judged through CAT. The best strategy to crack this test is to take mock tests available online and go through the basic concepts required.
  • GAT- General Ability Test. It is a 2-hour long(for B.Des) and 3-hour long (for BF.Tech) general aptitude based test to measure a candidate’s Quantitative ability, Communication skills, English comprehension and Analytical ability.( GAT is a written paper)

Topics covered in the GAT test are all very basic, involving elementary level questions based on logic and awareness (current affairs). For the preparation of GAT a candidate can take help from the study materials available in the market on each subject as well as solve sample papers for the same.

Total number of questions in GAT will be 100 for B.Des and a merit list will be posted for qualifying candidates.

Here’s a table highlighting the marking scheme for GAT:

Sections No of Questions in B.Des No. of Questions in M.Des
Quantitative Ability 20 20
Communication Ability 25 30
English Comprehension 25 30
Analytical Ability 15 25
General Knowledge and Current Affairs 15 15
Total Number of Questions 100 120

Situation test- Usually held during the month of May, this test is meant for candidates who have cleared their CAT and GAT and have been shortlisted by the NIFT authorities, according to the official website of NIFT this test evaluates candidates “on Space Visualization, Innovative and creative use of given material, composition of elements, color scheme, construction skill , finesse of the model and overall presentation etc. These parameters will be checked with the write up explaining the concept / idea behind the model constructed.

The weightage of the write up is 30%. Since the medium of teaching in NIFT is English, the write-up will be in English language. No marks will be given for write-up in any other language”

For BFTech Exam Pattern

For candidates seeking admission in the BFTech course, the GAT test will constitute 100% weightage.

  • The GAT test will be the only evaluation factor for this course, topics covered in the GAT exam are listed below in the syllabus section.

For M.Des Exam Pattern

For candidates seeking admission in NIFT’s M.Des course, in place of a situation test (as in the case of B.Des) Group discussion and Personal interview will constitute 30% weightage.

Candidates have to clear their CAT & GAT tests first, before being shortlisted for GD, another important thing to note: maximum marks for the GAT test for a Master of Design course is 120.

Group Discussions – After the preliminaries, the shortlisted candidates will appear for the GD round. Candidates for GD round will be accessed on all the basic evaluation factors such as

  • Leadership skills
  • Effective communication
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Knowledge of the topic
  • Contribution to the discussion
  • Problem-solving skills

For this round candidates are advised to take mock GD classes to improve their comfort level in dealing with groups (as other participants can turn highly competitive to gain attention). Focus on the (don’t)’s of a GD rather than Do’s to keep a good image while being effective at the same time.

Personal Interview- A panel of interviewers will judge the candidate in person, assessing his/her aptness for a creative course, their communication skills and general awareness, to prepare for PI a candidate can take help from all the various online tools available and create an interesting but professional resume.

For MF.Tech Exam Pattern

For admission in MF.Tech course, GAT will be the only preliminary test (with 70% total weightage) before getting shortlisted for GD and PI. General evaluation points for GD and PI are mentioned below.

  • Candidates are required to clear their GAT and then appear for GD and Personal Interview.(merit based)

For MFM Exam Pattern

Admission procedure for MF.Tech and MFM is similar as in both the courses candidates are shortlisted on the basis of their GAT score before appearing for GD and PI. (GAT constituting 70% weightage and rest 30%)

  • Same as in MF.Tech but with varying weight age for selection tests.

Below is a detailed table discussing the weightage for all the courses and their respective tests.
