The College of Fine Arts and The School of Planning & Architecture (SPA) were established in the erstwhile Nizam State in the year 1940. The College of Fine Arts and Architecture become the Govt. College of Fine Arts and Architecture in 1956 following the formation of the state of Andhra Pradesh. With the establishment of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in Oct 1972, the College merged with the university and became a Constituent College of the JNT University.

Under the special policy of providing a systematic education in Art and Architecture to the present needs of Human Facility and the Entertainment Industry, Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University was established by Act of Andhra Pradesh State Legislature No. 31 of 2008.

India is very rich in its culture and heritage. It has a great mythological background. Indian Culture and Philosophy is highly regarded and valued by the rest of the world. The Art and Architecture play an important role in pervading our Culture. The Indian rural folk have abundant talent which needs to be explored and put into application in modern technological developments in the fields of human facilities and entertainment

JNAFA University is the first of its kind in the entire country and is established in Andhra Pradesh/Telangana with the headquarters at Mahavir Marg, Masab Tank, Hyderabad. It is approved by AICTE, New Delhi.
