It was established in 1960 as a Regional Engineering College. It is financially supported by Government of India. It is designated as an Institute of nation importance.
The institute has four boys' hostels and one girls' hostel accommodating approximately 1500 boys and 200 girls.
NIT Srinagar offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs. The primary program is BTech. The institute also provides MTech and PhD programs.
The institute established an Industry Interaction cell in 1989.
Admission to the BTech program relies on JEE Main scores and JoSAA counselling. MTech admissions depend on GATE scores followed by CCMT counselling.
NIT Srinagar does not have AICTE approval but is NBA accredited.
In rankings NIT Srinagar holds 66th position by NIRF 2022 in engineering. It ranks 101-150 overall according to THE 2024.
In the 2023 placement report the institute achieved a placement rate of 108.38% with over 700 job offers. The highest salary package was INR 36.5 LPA while the median salary reached INR 10.48 LPA.
