Gopinath Bordoloi Nagar, Guwahati-781014Gauhati University is located in Jalukbari, Guwahati. It is the oldest university in North East India. It was established in 1948. Assam Legislative Assembly enacted Act that founded university. Gopinath Bordoloi, Krishna Kanta Handique and Birinchi Kumar Barua were instrumental in establishment of the university.
University covers an area of 508 acres and operates as a State Public University. Gauhati University is autonomous.
The university has 42 post-graduate departments and a constituent college for Engineering and Law. The institute follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). This allows students to select subjects according to their interests.
Gauhati University had 5411 students and 341 academic staff by 2018. There are 341 affiliated colleges offering both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in different fields like Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Medicine, Engineering and Technology.
Gauhati University provides many facilities, such as a library, separate hostels for boys and girls, a gym, a canteen, modern classrooms and an auditorium. The Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility (SAIF) is available for researchers and the scientific community.
Gauhati University has received an 'A' grade accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). It is recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and Association of Common wealth Universities (ACU).
In 2023 university was ranked 88th in National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). In 2022 rankings it held 36th position among universities.
The university has international collaborations with different institutes, including many universities from the UK, China, Japan, Italy, Korea and Bhutan.
