Shahid Chowk, M. G. RoadRanchi University is a public state university located in Ranchi. It was established in 1960. It is a state public university.
It offers many programs at undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil. and doctorate levels. The university includes 22 postgraduate departments, 19 constituent colleges and 47 affiliated colleges, serving nearly 1.6 lakh students. Initially, it had ten postgraduate departments, one constituent college and 20 affiliated colleges.
University has many facilities for student support, including a fully automated central library with 2 lakh books, hostels for boys and girls and ICT infrastructure. Other facilities include an auditorium, gym, banking services and a post office. The computing resources consist of over 300 systems, seven servers, Wi-Fi and LAN access.
Ranchi University recognizes multiple entrance tests for course admissions although specifics are not provided. It is acknowledged under Section 12B of UGC Act and received a 'B+' grade from NAAC in 2017.
In terms of rankings, it was placed 95th among colleges in India by QS World University in 2020. In 2023, it ranked 208th in India and 4702nd globally.
