Bharathidasan University is named after a celebrated Tamil poet, Bharathidasan (1891-1968). Located in Tiruchirappalli, BDU was established in 1982. Bharathidasan University is currently headed by Dr V. M. Muthukumar as its Vice Chancellor. It is affiliated to University Grants Commission. It has also been Re-accredited with an A-Grade by NAAC. The main semi-urban campus of Bharathidasan University is spread across 631 acres, the south campus is spread across 355 acres and the Khajamalai campus is spread across 52 acres.The motto of the university is 'We will create a brave new world'. The University endeavours to be true to such a vision by creating in the region a brave new world of academic innovation for social change.

The University has totally 4 Faculties, 16 Schools, 34 Departments and 11 Specialized Research Centers. There are 195 faculty members catering to 2372 students and scholars in the University. There are 123 colleges affiliated to the university including 120 Arts and Science colleges and 3 colleges of Fine Arts. Among them, 8 government and 11 government aided colleges to have an autonomous status. The university also has some remarkable associations that are non-academic in nature such as Placement and Training Cell, Women Involved In Sanitation and Hygiene (WISH), National Service Scheme, Students Counselling and Grievances Redressal Cell.
