Government Medical College, Surat was established in 1964. It is affiliated with Veer Narmad South Gujarat University and recognized by the Medical Council of India.
Campus covers 130 acres and includes main college buildings, New Civil Hospital, student hostels and staff accommodations.
The institute offers many courses. The flagship program is the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). It admits 250 students annually for MBBS course and has 170+ seats for postgraduate degree and diploma programs. The faculty consists of over 250 members.
Facilities available at college include hostels, a library, computer lab, lecture halls and New Civil Hospital for practical training. Admission criteria depend on results from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) with NEET UG scores for undergraduate courses and NEET PG scores for postgraduate courses.
In 2023 the college ranked 89th nationally according to the India Institutional Ranking Framework. The college provides employment opportunities placing over 90% of MBBS graduates in the college's hospital.
