Government Medical College, Srinagar was established in 1959. It is one of the oldest government medical colleges in North India.

The college offers undergraduate postgraduate and super specialty courses in medicine. Primary program is Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). Also it provides MD/MS/DNB and PG Diploma programs at the postgraduate level. For super specialty the college offers DrNB and MCh.

The college is affiliated with the University of Kashmir. Admissions to all courses require candidates to take the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

The Medical Council of India (MCI) approves the college. It is also recognized by National Medical Commission (NMC).

Facilities at the college include hostels, a cafeteria, laboratories, an auditorium and sports facilities.
