Ananda Chandra College is a government sponsored under-graduate college affiliated to the University of North Bengal. The College had a very humble beginning in September, 1942 imparting education in Intermediate in Arts having affiliation with Calcutta University. The College provided leadership in higher education in the turmoil days of August Movement and now devoted to the academic and social upliftment of the young generation of the area. Presently the College is catering to the needs of thousands of the students in Arts and Science stream. There are seventeen teaching departments in both the faculties of Arts and Science. The college is a premier institution aiming at the upliftment of the young generation of Jalpaiguri and adjoining areas in academic, social, and economic fields. Women students coming from the nearby villages prefer to join this college. 90% of the students of the college come from economically weak family background. A majority of students are from SC/ ST and other backward classes. The campus of the college is spread over an area of 22.2 acres of land . There are 4000 students studying in the college. Diversity of language and culture alongwith overwhelming economic backwardness of the region has given an additional dimension to the need of education. Now the College aspires to make education more need based and community oriented. There are 38 permanent teachers , 14 part time teachers. Out of these 17 teachers are having Ph.D qualifications and 3 teachers are with M.Phil qualifications. B.Sc. (Microbiology) Honours, B.P.Ed., and M.A.(Bengali) courses are being offered on the self-financing basis. The College is affiliated to the University of North Bengal and is recognized under section 2(f) &12(B) of the UGC Act since 1956. The College is known for its good performance in the fields of academics and cultural promotion in the area and it is putting all its efforts to cope with the wave of globalization. Teachers of all the departments are engaged in research and presenting their research findings at national/ International seminars and conferences.
