Salem Government Arts College at Maravaneri area is the oldest higher education centre in Salem District. It was improved as an Anglo-Vernacular School in 1857 by A.J. Alexander Arbuthnot. In the same year, it was converted into district school (Zillah high school). Then 195 students studied in that school. The school was accommodated in a rented building till 1863 when it moved to its own building, constructed with funds rose partly by public subscription and partly by the Government grant. In 1864 the school sent its first batch of students to Madras University’s Matriculation Examination.

Aim

The aim of the college is to offer quality higher education, particularly to the under-privileged women, installing in them a sense of confidence and hope and encouraging them for academic excellence and to make them understand the basic human values, communal harmony, tolerance and national solidarity.

Vision

Their vision is to motivate the students to acquire communicational skills and leadership qualities, to prepare the students aspire for research scholarship and for studies abroad, to motivate them to be socially conscious and responsible, to teach the students the cultural heritage of our country and bring out the creative skills and hidden talents of the students.
