The Gujarat Foren­sic Sci­ences Uni­ver­sity was estab­lished by the Gov­ern­ment of Gujarat vide Act No.17of2008passed by the Gujarat Leg­isla­tive Assem­bly in September2008,with the aim to balance the acute short­age against the increas­ing demand of foren­sic experts in the coun­try&the world. The Uni­ver­sity works to make the Crim­i­nal Jus­tice Deliv­ery Sys­tem tech-savvy and it would help over­come the actual short­age of skilled man­power engaged in this field and across many related industries. It is func­tional since February2009. In May 2011, it wasrec­og­nized by the Uni­ver­sity Grants Com­mis­sion as a State Uni­ver­sity under Sec­tion22of theUGCAct (1956)to award degrees. GFSU is the first such University in the world to be established solely for the study of Forensic Sciences.

The University is headed by the Director General; followed by the Registrar and a Director as the head of each of the Institutes. The highest body of the University is the Board of Governors; having the Director General of the University as its Chairman.

The University comprises three prestigious study institutes - Institute of Research & Development,Institute of Forensic Science,Institute of Behavioural Science.

The Insti­tute of Research & Development is a pre­mier insti­tute of Foren­sic Phar­macy and Nan­otech­nol­ogy in India - which pro­videsMSand doc­toral degrees to stu­dents encom­pass­ing the var­i­ous spe­cial­iza­tions of foren­sic sci­ence such as Phar­ma­ceu­ti­cals, Nan­otech­nol­ogy, Chem­istry, Envi­ron­men­tal Sci­ence and Man­age­ment, cre­at­ing experts in these fields to enter the demanding industry.

The Institute concentrates on the discovery, development and experimental practices of Forensic Sciences - building a framework through extensive research and professional training. Insti­tute of Foren­sic Science

The Institute of Forensic Science educates solely in the field of Crim­i­nal Inves­ti­ga­tion and aims to develop students who are aware of the scientifictechnology andskills thatisever-advancing. The Institute helps students work in the appli­ca­tion of var­i­ous sci­en­tific dis­ci­plines for the pur­pose of jus­tice deliv­ery. The Institute is known for some of its exclusive courses in this field viz. M.Sc in Anti-Terrorism and Homeland Security,M.Tech in Cyber Secu­rityandInci­dent Response, PG Diploma in Foren­sic Nurs­ing,MS inDig­i­tal Foren­sics, M.Sc in Foren­sic Odon­tol­ogy etc.

Insti­tute of Behav­ioural Science

The Institute of Behavioural Science has been established to impart education and research in the domains of Brain and Mental Health studies - encompassing crim­i­nal behav­iour, foren­sic psy­chol­ogy, and clin­i­cal psy­chol­ogy. Students are taught to identify deviant or criminal behaviours, ways to combat the same, counselling and rehabilitation, cause and effect relations, stress and substance abuse etc.
