Sri. C. Achutha Menon Govt. College, Thrissurwas established in1972as an arts and commerce college by the Kerala Government by the veteran Communist leader, the C. Achutha Menon. The college was built in the wake of the protracted strike of the All-Kerala Private College Teachers' Association. This is the one of the two colleges built by Kerala Government in Thrissur District. Other one is Panampilly Memorial Government College in Chalakudy.The college was initially housed in the available space in the Government Training College in Thrissur.

The Institute started functioning with three degree courses in history, economics and commerce and two pre-degree batches in history and commerce. B.Com course was added in 1978 and M.Com in 1984. The constraint of space did not permit the college to start the science courses sanctioned by the university. However, the stage for the second phase of the development was set with the college shifting to the sprawling 25-acre campus at Kuttanellur in 1991.

Admission

Admission to various programmes is based strictly on clear norms laid down by the University of Calicut, to which the college is affiliated, and the Govt. of Kerala. The admission notification is issued from the University and is published in newspapers and the University web-site.

The rules and regulations regarding the admissions are made known through the prospectus issued along with the application forms for admission and also through the college handbook. The College web-site also announces the details and provides a link to the University web-site. From the present academic year onwards the University has made admissions centralized. The College follows the reservation policy of the State for the students belonging to socially disadvantaged sections in its admission procedure.

On the basis of qualification, students can apply for any programme of their choice. The application forms and prospectus are issued at a nominal cost to the applicants from the date of publication of the results of the qualifying examination. The profile of the student enrolment shows that women participation is 69%.

There is a coordinator at college level to coordinate the admission work done by Departmental Committees. The provisional rank list of the students selected and the waiting lists are prominently displayed on the college notice board and also intimated to the students selected, through post.

Athletes and sports persons are given admission as per Government norms and they are also provided with all the additional support they need. Two seats in each degree programme are reserved for this. At the post graduate level this is one seat for every 20 sanctioned seats. The applicants for the sports seat should have represented at least the District Sports Zone. Preference will be given to those who have represented the state. The college also gives admission to the differently-abled students and supports them in their academic and non-academic matters.

Selection of students

Admission to various programmes is based on merit in the qualifying examination, satisfying all the norms of reservation as per Government rules. The cut-off percentage for admission will vary slightly as per the general trend of students' performance in the qualifying examinations for each programme.

Ensures Transparency in the Admission process

The college strictly follows the rules laid down both by the University and the Government of Kerala to ensure the transparency in the admission procedure. Duly filled in application forms are sorted at the college office and indexed on the basis of norms issued by the University and the rank list is published accordingly. A college level admission committee constituted by the College Council monitors the admission process. There will be a Co-coordinator at college level to co-ordinate the admission work done by departmental committees headed by Department Head/Department Co-coordinator and the College Office. The provisional rank lists of the students selected and the waiting lists are prominently displayed on college notice boards and also intimated to the students through post. Complaints, if any, can be brought to the notice of college authorities and the matter will be addressed quickly.

Reservation of Seats

In the admission of SC/ST/ OBC/ Socially and Economically Backward Community students to various courses, 15 % of the sanctioned number of seats is reserved for SC applicants and 5% for ST candidates. 20% seats are reserved for OBC and 10% for BPL (from forward communities only) section.

Other Reservations :-

  • Two seats in each Degree programme are reserved for the students of outstanding performance in sports and games. At the post graduate level this is one seat for every 20 seats. Where the number of seats is less than 20 for a subject, the seats may be pooled together, treating M.A. and M.Com separately. Where the number of seats is still less than 15 after such pooling all the PG courses may be pooled together. A minimum of one seat shall be allowed if there are not sufficient seats.

The applicants for sports seat should have represented at least the District Sports Zone. Preference will be given to those who have represented the State. The applicant will have to produce the Certificates from the Secretary of the State Association of the event concerned.

  • 3% of total seats are set apart exclusively for physically handicapped candidates.
