The Government Arts College, Coimbatore was established by the British Government in 1852. College covers 40 acres of land. It operates under Bharathiar University as an affiliated college. In 1987 it gained autonomous status.

The college offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs in Arts, Commerce and Science. Its flagship courses include M.A, M.Com, M.Sc, B.A, B.Com, B.Sc and MCA. The student body consists of more than 5,500 students. It has around 250 faculty members.

The college provides many facilities like hostels, a canteen, an auditorium, a computer training center, a cooperative store, an infotech hall and a museum. Admission in most courses occurs based on merit. Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET) scores are accepted for certain courses like MCA.

NAAC has accredited college with an 'A' Grade. All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has approved it. In 2023 college ranked 44th in National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). Institute has collaborations with universities in UK for student exchange programs.

College organizes campus recruitment drives yearly. Companies like Act Fibernet, Vodafone, HDFC Home Loan, KFC and Cognizant visit campus for placements.
