Tangla College was established in 1970. The college aims to provide higher education for socially and economically disadvantaged students.

Tangla College is affiliated with Gauhati University.

It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs across different disciplines, including Arts, Science, Commerce and Computer Applications. The college has three academic streams- Arts Commerce and Science.

Since February 2015 it has offered a Job Oriented Integrated Course of Certified Industrial Accountants (CIA) in collaboration with the Institute of Computer Accountants and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).

The institute has over 3,000 students. It provides facilities like a library, computer lab, sports amenities and hostels. The library features computers and reading areas. Additional facilities include ICT resources a canteen and an Information Resource Centre.

The college conducts its own entrance tests for course admissions.

Tangla College holds accreditation from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an 'A' grade and is approved by University Grants Commission (UGC).

Tangla College has been ranked among the top colleges in Assam by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
