Distance MBA in Chennai

Chennai, one of the largest cities in India is not simply a metropolitan city, but also a major education hub catering to a very large number of students in all fields. Most Science, Arts and Commerce colleges in the city are affiliated to University of Madras, while the city is home to IIT Madras, and Anna University. Chennai also has various research institutions including two CSIR research centers.


Chennai being one of the largest cities in South India is proliferating with colleges, including various distance/ correspondence course colleges. The city houses major Universities of the likes of Anna University, University of Madras, Alagappa University and Tamil Nadu Open University, which offer Distance MBA in various specializations. Further there are other institutes in the city like the Institute of Management Technology, Indian School of Business Management, Jaro Education that offer distance MBA partnering with recognized Universities. Also, Chennai has study centers of the famous institutes like that of Symbiosis Center of Distance Learning, IGNOU, etc.


Anna University is approved by both the UGC and the DEC (Distance Education council), similarly University of Madras is also accredited by the NAAC with “A” grade, and is recognized by the UGC. The Distance Education Council also approves Tamil Nadu Open University, the first state Open University modeled in the lines of IGNOU. Indian School of Business Management (ISBM) offers autonomous programs that are UGC recognized, and also provides courses in collaboration with other universities.

Eligibility Criteria

Anna University requires its students to be a graduate in any field from a recognized university, and to have passed in the Distance Education Entrance Examination held by Anna University. University of Madras similarly, requires its applicants to have a graduate degree from any recognized university, and have a minimum work experience of two years. Tamil Nadu Open University only requires its applicants to be a graduate from a recognized university. Other colleges and institutes in the city have eligibility criteria corresponding to their partnering universities, for example: Jaro Education admissions require eligibility criteria of that of NMIMS University.

Fee Structure

Tamil Nadu Open University being a state government run University is inexpensive and requires its students to pay only Rs7, 500 in Tamil Nadu. The Students at Indian School Business Management (ISBM) pay a total fee of Rs45, 00 for the course and have the online mode of payment. Anna University requires its students to pay around Rs18, 600 for the first semester and consequently Rs12, 500 for the following semesters. The Fees at Anna University are to be paid through Bank Draft, while other colleges also offer payment through Bank Challan and Credit/ Debit Card.

Anna University offers MBA in General Management, Technology Management, Marketing Management, Health Services Management, Hospitality and Tourism Management, etc. Tamil Nadu Open University offers Distance MBA course in Retail Management, Shipping and Logistics, and Hospital Administration. Similarly University of Madras offers course specializations in Systems Management, Financial Management, Apparel Management, Education Management, etc. Other Institutes also offer the popular most sought after specializations.

Admission Procedure

The applicants of Anna University have to obtain the admission form and the prospectus online and submit the filled form, along with the application fee of Rs 650 payable by Demand Draft; the candidates then have to appear for separate entrance examinations. Application for the University of Madras can be obtained for a fee of Rs100 only, and the filled application form must be submitted along with the required attested documents, to be considered for admissions. The admission process at TNOU (Tamil Nadu Open University) is similar, and the fees are to be paid either by Bank Challan, or by Bank Draft.
