Periyar University is a state public university located in Salem, Tamil Nadu. The Government of Tamil Nadu established it in 1997. It was set on a 90-acre campus.

It has 27 teaching and research departments organized into eight schools. Also it provides postgraduate and research programs across 29 departments.

The student enrollment exceeds 50,000 at the university. An additional 140,000 students are enrolled in its affiliated colleges.

For MBA and MCA programs admissions depend on marks from the TANCET exam. For other postgraduate courses admission criteria are based on graduation marks.

Periyar University offers multiple academic and non-academic facilities. These include laboratories, classrooms, a library, hostels and cafeterias. The campus provides Wi-Fi access for students.

University is recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited by NAAC with an 'A++' grade. According to the MoE NIRF 2023 rankings the university holds the 59th position among Indian universities.

Periyar University has formed international partnerships with universities in countries like USA, Canada, Australia and Japan. It has established Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with these institutes.
