Madurai Kamaraj University came into being in the year 1965 and has clearly moved its way to become one of the ivy league colleges in Southern India. The university is wholly funded and owned by the Government of Tamil Nadu and the University Grants Commission of India.
It also stands out for being one of the 9 universities in India with the status of ‘Potential for Excellence’. There are around a 100 colleges that are affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University.
The University consists of 77 highly acclaimed departments and 20 academic schools offering undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and certification courses. At present there are around 2428 students studying at this public university. It also provides distance learning courses.
It has academic centres and participatory colleges across Tamil Nadu. Interested candidates can get the application forms for both on campus and distance learning courses. Students can also apply through the website’s online portal.
Upon registering Indian students would have to enclose all the supporting documents and pay an application fees of Rs.150/-, which will be 10$ in the case of foreign applicants.
The National Institute of Ranking Framework has gave it a rank of 77 across India.

Application and Admission Procedure
Students must fill the form through the online admission link that is able on the Kamaraj University’s site. After filling the form correctly, students have to take its printout and send it along with the application fee which is INR 600 through demand draft on the address of the University i.e. The Registrar, Madurai Kamaraj University.
Also, don’t forget to attach the important documents that are required and before sending you must self – attest it. If students want to apply for more than one course they have to fill a separate form.
Admissions will be given through merit based on marks secured in entrance exam that the university conducts itself. Selected students will be called for the second round that includes personal interview.
Students who did not appear for the entrance exam will not eligible for the second round. After this, the final list of selected students will be released.
Hostel and Facilities
The Madurai Kamaraj University is situated in Palkalai Nagar, Madurai. The university campus provides a serene environment with state of the art infrastructure. Basic infrastructure includes incentivized classrooms, workshops and Information technology laboratories.
A well-built library and digital research center are also available on campus. Other facilities provided are guest houses, Bank, Post office, Healthcare center, Co-operative stores and university canteen.
The university has five hostels for men and three hostels for women. It also provides the facility of separate residential quarters for married students and postdoctoral fellows. Each hostel provides all the basic infrastructure and a homely feeling. The Rooms are well furnished, the mess is hygienic, recreational room includes indoor and outdoor sports equipment as well as an entertainment arena.
Cooperative thrift society is available on campus with a paid-up share capital of Rs.24,56,970. Other activities include debates, cultural meets and literary events.
