Stanley Medical College (SMC), Chennai was established in 1938. It is a government medical college with hospitals is one of the oldest medical colleges in India. Stanley Medical College is ranked 9th according to the NDTV ranking of top medical colleges in India. The College is associated with the Government Stanley Hospital which has 1280 beds for in-patient treatment.Stanley Medical College is known for providing high quality education in its well designed campus. The college provides world class laboratories to students in order to give them par knowledge.

its original hospital is more than 200 years old. It is considered as the one of the best state-owned college in the field of medical in the country. Late. Dr. T. Thomas, India’s first cardio-thoracic surgeon did his training at Stanley Medical College. The government hospital associated to the college has 1280 beds for in-patient treatment and has an out-patient attendance of more than 5000 patients daily.

The three well known departments of the Stanley Medical Hospitals are Surgical Gastroenterology, Urology and the Institute of Hand Rehabilitation and Plastic Surgery. The Institute for Research and Rehabilitation of Hand and the Department of Plastic Surgery (IRRH & DPS) is one of the best centers in Southeast Asia. The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology was the first in India to perform a successful liver transplant, under the leadership of Dr. R.P. Shanmugam, Surgical Gastroenterologist and the first among Hospitals/ Hospital Departments in India to obtain the ISO 9001 certification.

Research Centre:

Stanley Medical College in Tamil Nadu is among the best medical study and research centres in the country. It is the first medical college in the state to receive 250 MBBS seats in 2013. The medical college has an eight story surgical complex to perform 40 surgeries simultaneously.

Faculty & Alumni:

Some of the notable faculty and alumni of the college include Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy (founder of Aravind Eye Hospitals), Professor Ramaswami Venkataswamy (founder of rehabilitation of hand and department of plastic surgery at college), and Dr. Prathap C. Reddy (founder of Apollo Hospitals). The department of surgical gastroenterology at SMC college was the first in India to operate a successful liver transplant.
