Karnataka University Dharwad is a state public university established in 1949. It became a university in 1950. Campus covers 888 acres.

Karnataka University offers many postgraduate, M.Phil. and PhD courses. It has 47 postgraduate departments and 224 faculty members. More than 4,500 students are enrolled into these courses.

University includes 5 constituent colleges. These colleges provide undergraduate and postgraduate courses in science, arts, commerce, fine arts, law and education. Over past 70 years number of affiliated colleges has grown from 34 to more than 250.

The university provides many facilities. These include hostels for boys and girls, a playground, gym, healthcare services, modern classrooms, cafeteria, library, auditorium, transportation and parking.

Admission to postgraduate programs excluding M.C.A. requires an entrance exam. For MCA program, scores from PG-CET conducted by CPAC, VTU Campus, Belgaum, are accepted.

Karnataka University is recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC). It holds an 'A' grade from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

In rankings it consistently places between 90th and 95th positions in QS India University rankings. It is among the top 550 colleges in Asia according to the Asian University rankings 2020.

University has established international collaborations with institutes in USA, Japan, China, UK and other nations.

Placements - 25 out of 189 eligible students from one-year postgraduate courses were placed with a median salary of Rs 2 LPA. For two-year postgraduate courses 277 out of 1,875 students secured placements with a median salary of Rs 3 LPA.
