Berhampore Girls' College was established in 1946. It is the first government sponsored girls' college in the state of West Bengal. The institution was founded by Smt. Amiya Rao, an eminent scholar and the wife of the District Collector Sri B.G. Rao, as a seat for the advancement of women's education and uplift in this predominantly agricultural and backward belt of the state. Smt. Rao was the first Principal of this institution and was succeeded by Smt. Preeti Gupta, who became an institution in the field of women's education and uplift. This is the first college in the Murshidabad district to be accredited by NAAC, UGC in 2004 and to be assessed according to the new nine-point gradation system. It has been accredited with a B grade with 72% marks.
The sole only-women's college in the Murshidabad district BGC is located in the heart of Berhampore town. The college has a sprawling 10 acres campus. A pretty flower garden sits in the front driveway, a huge playground stretches out from the main building to the staff quarters at the southern end of the campus. The building is fringed by groves of tropical trees, which add a sylvan charm to the place. The main building is a three storied spacious structure with wide corridors connecting the different departments housed in separate wings. In the well of the house stands a quaint open-air stage adding to the picturesque setting. The pristine atmosphere makes learning a gratifying experience.
Affiliated to the Kalyani University since 1999, it is a grant-in-aid government funded institute. It offers Honours and General courses in science and humanities with a total number of fourteen departments (Seven in Arts faculty, Seven in Science faculty) supported by 36 permanent, 15 temporary and 10 part-time teachers. The college also offers several support services, such as a central library, several seminar (departmental) libraries, a computer centre, a health centre, sports facilities, common-room, canteen, hostels, housing for the staff, a grievance redress cell and an NSS unit.
Vision
Vision is a process for achieving agreement on the kind of future that an organization needs to create for itself–and a shared commitment to creating that future. Even the Greek philosopher Aristotle acknowledged that “the soul never thinks without a picture”.The vision of Berhampore girls college is an excellent betterment of its future. We are eager to visualize the position and standard of our institution to an elegant edge of success. We would like to see far through the horizon up the summit. We would like to direct and motivate our students, members and faculties to such an edge through a furnished and determined path. Our vision process is powered by the motivations as :
1. Help both students and members of our college to internalize a new understanding of the challenges and opportunities they face as well as formulate an appropriate 'road map' to reach where we need to.
2. Lead our college to a level of standard that would set a benchmark for other institutions in and around the state.
