Gokhale Memorial Girls College, Kolkata was established in 1939. The college is affiliated to Calcutta University and accredited by NAAC. This college has emerged today as one of the premier educational institutions in the eastern part of India in its own right, offering state-of-the art quality education to countless aspiring female students. The objective of this college is not merely to churn out women graduates but to train women so as to develop their thoughts and ideals as right citizens, capable home builders and conscientious workers.

The aim of the college is to develop and empower of women through education that fosters knowledge and skills, promotes values of equality, secularism and national integration, moulds character through discipline and rigor and creates an open mind capable of assimilating the best traditions of the east and the west. The objective of the college is to disseminate of knowledge by striving for academic excellence and placing emphasis on discipline.

By naming the college on his name, the college has shown infinite respect and dignity for this well-known educationist and a freedom fighter. Among other pioneering stalwarts, Sarala Ray, popularly known as Mrs. P. K. Ray, stands as a prominent social reformer and educationist, who founded the Gokhale Memorial Girls’ School in 1920. The main objective behind establishing this college was to train women in bringing them to the main streamline of the progressive India. The college offers three year degree course with Honors and Major distinction in Arts and science stream.
