Mes Ponnani College, Ponnani Malappuram

Past few decades have witnessed a paradigm transformation in the educational profile of Kerala. The Muslim Educational Society is one of the major architects of such transformation. The movement, that was started by a group of socially conscious and well-known professionals, intellectuals, educationalists and businessmen, is now one of the forerunners in upholding the torch of modern education in the state. The idea of a college at Ponnani actually emanated from the vision of late Dr. P.K. Abdul Gafoor, the founder and President of MES in 1967. Since economic backwardness goes hand in hand with educational backwardness, the establishment of a centre for higher education was the need of the hour for the economic empowerment of all socially marginalized groups who had so far been deprived of their right to education and employment. The long cherished dream became a reality the very next year under the patronage of late Dr. P.K. Abdul Gafoor and Sri. E.K. Imbichi Bava and Sri. C.H. Mohammed Koya, both being the then Ministers of Kerala. From a humble beginning in 1968 that included construction of a small building and admittance of 180 students to the first batch for pre-degree course, the college has grown in leaps and bounds. Stretching in over 25 sq. km. the college now offers 9 UG, 5 PG and 2 Ph.D. programmes. Over a thousand students, 62 qualified and competent teachers and 41 non teaching staff form part of the teaching learning process. M.E.S. Ponnani College has completed 46 years of dedicated service to the cause of higher education in the most socially and economically backward district of Malappuram, Kerala.

Ponnani of yore is known as “The Seat of Learning”. Our vision is to regain this past catchword.

To work for the educational, social, cultural and economic advancement of the people of the region, especially the minority and backward classes in general and fishermen population in particular.
