Tamilnadu Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Chennai Tiruvallur

Tamilnadu Veterinary & Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) is situated in Chennai. It is a state public university established in 1903 by Tamilnadu government. This institute is first veterinary university in Asia. It is an autonomous institute.

It offers many programs at UG, PG and PhD level. The courses are offered in Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, Food Technology, Poultry Technology, Dairy Technology, Bioinformatics and Biotechnology. The BVSc & AH program is its flagship course.

The university has more than 1,400 students and 620 faculty members. The faculty-student ratio is approximately 25-1. The university has seven Veterinary Colleges, a College of Food and Dairy Technology and a College of Poultry Production and Management.

Student facilities include sports areas, a library, health services, clinics, Wi-Fi and audio-visual classrooms. The university also has a Veterinary Incubation Foundation to support start-ups in veterinary and animal sciences sectors.

The university conducts its own entrance tests for admission. Undergraduate students are selected based on merit in qualifying exams. Postgraduate and PhD candidates are selected via the CET entrance exam.

The university is recognized by IGC and accredited by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). It is also approved by AICTE and associated with Association of Indian Universities.

It was ranked 151 out of 200 colleges in India in 2023 by NIRF. It ranks 299th in India and 5789th globally in 2024.

According to NIRF reports of 2023 around 70 undergraduate and 15 postgraduate candidates received placements. The median packages are INR 3 LPA for undergraduates and INR 8.4 LPA for postgraduates.
