Maharishi College of Natural Law was established in the year 1982 with a substantial donation given by Maharishi Institute of Creative Intelligence (MICI), one of the Organisations of his Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, in whose name this institution has been christened.
At that time it was a great pride for the people of Orissa that this College was one of the 1001 educational institutions opened all over the world by His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, where besides regular curriculum, the teaching in Meditation and Science of Creative intelligence was imparted by the trained teachers coming from Rishikesh Ashram.
In the beginning, it imparted instruction only for boys in Arts, Science and Commerce in Intermediate Course, in a rented house with only 384 Students and 17 Teaching Staff. After six months, the college was shifted and started functioning in its own multistoried building located in a sprawling four acres of land at Sahid Nagar in the heart of the Capital City, Bhubaneswar. The College is recognised by the Government of Orissa and was first affiliated to Utkal University. But with the change of the education pattern, the College was affiliated to the Council of Higher Secondary Education from the session 1983-84 to impart instruction for +2 Courses in Arts, Science and Commerce.
To give educational facilities to girls in addition to boys, co-education has been introduced from the academic session 1988-89. The +3 Degree Courses in Arts from 1988-89, Science from 1989-90 and Commerce from 1993-94 have been introduced under Utkal University. As time rolled on the College got affiliation for teaching Honours in Economics, History and Psychology in + 3 Arts stream from the session 1993-94 and Honours in Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology in +3 Science stream from the session 1994-95 and Honours in Mathematics and Education from the Session 1996-97 and Commerce Honours in Accounting and Management from the Session 2001-01 and Honours in Sanskrit and Philosophy from the Session 2004-2005. It is worthy to note that the College is enjoying full aided College status since 1991. The College had no Governing Body / Management of its own as it is subjudice and by orders of Hon'ble Orissa High Court, it was under the direct control of the Director, Higher Education, Orissa who himself was the Receiver of the College since 2004. From the Session 2004-2005 Sub-Collector of Bhubaneswar is working as the President of the Governing Body.
In year (2004-2005) the college completed its 22nd year. The present student strength of the college is about 3000 with 54 Teaching Staff and 70 Non-Teaching Staff. Though the College is in its growing stage, it has made much headway over the years and it is striving hard to emerge as one of the prestigious institutions in the state. The present growth and vigour has been possible due to the donations contributed by the poorest of the poor and the rich ones of the capital city, Bhubaneswar, the generous and eminent persons, and above all the students of the college from time to time. Let us all work together to carry on the mission of His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to make it grow further to a still higher level with sincerity and truth, in the name of the Almighty God.
