Kerala University Distance Education.

The University of Kerala which was earlier called University of Travancore was established in 1937 by a promulgation of the Maharaja of Travancore who was also the First Vice-Chancellor of the University.

The School Of Distance Education in University of Kerala was started in 1976 as a Teaching and Researching department of the University of Kerala, is one of the distance learning in the state of Kerala. The SDE was set up with some objectives that were:-

  1. Provision of quality education to so called weaker section of the society that is Women and senior citizens.
  2. To encourage diversification and career advancement.
  3. To contribute in Human Resource Development.
  4. To not to limit education just to a certain age.
  5. Providing training in softer and technical skills.

Talking about the courses offered in the School of Distance Education there are several courses that include B.A., B.Sc., BCA, BBA, B.L.I.Sc, B.Com, M.A., M.Sc., M.L.I.Sc.,M.Com, MBA and many more.

If we talk about the student strength of the university it consists more than 5000 students and has 16 faculties and 41 departments which are spread over its three campuses. University of Kerala Was ranked 1001+ by World University Rankings and 301-350th by Asia University Rankings in 2019.

Admissions and Fee Payments.

For getting admission in any UG or PG courses the student has to apply for the respective course online on the official website of University of Kerala. The admission of the students is based on the marks obtained in class 10+2 for UG courses and a relevant degree for PG courses. If the students are not able to apply online for the respective courses they can get the prospectus and application form the SDE office by depositing the application fee of INR 250. The fees can be paid through a DD or a challan receipt. Beside the application form students need to carry following documents with them for the completion of their admission in particular course.

  • Original marksheet of the qualifying examination.
  • If the students are not having the original degree, in that case a Provisional Certificate issued from the university will be accepted. This is only for those students who are applying for PG courses.
  • A original copy of Transfer Certificate which the student last attended.
  • If in any case the university doesn’t grant TC a affidavit attested by a Notary Public/Second Class Judicial Magistrate in lieu of TC along with a letter from the university that they don’t grant TC needs to be submitted by the students.
  • TC is not required for the students above the age pf 60 years.
  • The DD/pay-in-Slip of the university for the amount required to be deposited for tuition/other fees is also required.
  • The registrar office shall provide the student with a eligibility certificate, if the student has passed the qualifying exam from outside Kerala University and needs to be submitted during the time of admission.
  • Identity cards filled with proper name and address of the applicant in capital letters and photograph affixed.
  • Migration Certificate in case students have passed the qualifying exam of another University/board other than University of Kerala.
  • Completed E-Grantz form from Akshaya Kendra for SC/ST/OEC students.
  • Caste and Income Certificate, along with a copy of Aadhar card, Copies of SSLC, +2 and degree.

The University of Kerala provides specialized courses in MBA in School of Distance Education. To name a few these courses are MBA in Financial Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing Management, Systems Management and Operations Management.

Approvals and Rankings

The Kerala University Distance education is approved by University Grants Commission (UGC). Besides that University Of Kerala was ranked 801-1000 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2018 and 251-300 in Asia. It was ranked 47 in India overall by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2018and 30 among Universities.

Placements

The agenda that the Kerala University follows behind placement is “Nothing less than the industry best”. The placements cell of Kerala University helps the students by providing them with best experience at the best industries with reasonable salaries. Not only full-time jobs but also providing good internships at recognisable companies with good stipend. Students from M.Tech were provided with the internship at ISRO with the stipend of 12,000. Companies like TCS, Accenture had visited the campus. To say, overall the placements are good and the rest depends on the skills a student pertains within himself/herself.

Scholarships available in Kerala University

2 CH Muhammedkoya Scholarship Renewal This scholarship is provided to the girls from Latin, Muslim and Christian backgrounds for higher education.
3 ASPIRE Scholarship (ASPR) Students in A. James Clarks School of Engineering who have at least 14 credit hours and have attained minimum of 3.0 GPA.
4 APJ Abdul Kalam Scholarship
  • The eligibility of this scholarship is same as Mother Teressa Scholarship and the added criteria is that the student should study in Govt./Aided/Govt. Approved self-financing polytechnics.
  • BPL students will be given preferences.
5 Post metric scholarship for minorities (PMS)
  1. students should be studying in class 11th or above and should obtain above 50% marks in each class.
  2. The family annual income should not exceed above INR 2 Lakhs.
6 Post Metric scholarship for disabilities (PMSD)
  • this scholarship is open for Indian students only.
  • The disabled students should be certified by competent medical authority of the state.
7 State Merit Scholarship (SMS)
  • The student should be the resident of Kerala.
  • Must have 75% attendance in the previous year.
  • Should attain 50% percentile in class 12th.
  • Family annual income should not exceed from 1 Lakh.
8 Muslim Nadar Girls Scholarship (MNS)
  • Should be a first year in HSC/VHSC and under graduate course in Govt./Aided arts and science college.
  • The girl should belong from forward of BPL or backward community.
9 Sanskrit Scholarship (SSE) Sanskrit should be one of the subject with persuading course.
10 Suvarna Jubilee Merit Scholarship (SJMS)
  • Should be a first year student persuading any course in Govt./Aided colleges whether under graduate or post graduate.
  • Should belong from a BPL family.
  • Should attain 50% marks in previous year.
